Recommendations Wanted: Paranormal Shifters

Genres: Paranormal Romance

A long time ago, I burned out on paranormals. I couldn’t bring myself to read any more of them and went on a long hiatus from them. This past year, I’ve slowly been working my way back into them. I’m still pretty burned out on vampires, but I’ve been digging shifters and fantasy-type novels. Aside from shifters, I also love novels featuring psychics or psychic powers.

A few of my favorites from this part year:

The Elder Races series by Thea Harrison
The Alpha and Omega series by Patrcia Briggs
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (new book coming in March!!)
The HeartMates series by Robin D. Owens

I’m looking for recommendations similar to the books I’ve listed above. I only review some of the books I read, but I record them all at Goodreads. You can check out my profile to see what I’ve read already.

I have Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter’s Unbound series in my TBR pile. I plan to pick those up shortly. I tried reading Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi series, but I stalled out on the second book. The world was way too busy for me. Same with Christine Warren’s The Others series.

What are some of your favorite paranormal books? Help!

  1. I personally love Shelly Laurenston’s Pride Series and her Dragon Kin series written as G.A. Aiken, always good for laughs. For a different kind of “shifter” I also enjoyed Laurann Dohner’s work from her New Species series published by Ellora’s Cave. How Beauty Met the Beast and How Beauty Saved the Beast are two good paranormal novellas published by Carina Press. You can also try Zoe Winters, her first novella, Kept is free on her website. Eve Langlais has a bunch of shifter books, Charlotte Stein wrote a fantastic novellette called Raw Heat about werewolves. Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright is amazing. Larissa Ione’s Demonica series is a cool take on demons and her Horsemen of the Apocolypse are unlike anything I’ve read so far. Kresley Cole is a paranormal classic, her books feature werewolves and vampires.

  2. I would have to agree with LoquaciousReads, Shelly Laurenston’s books are great! I would also HIGHLY recommend Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series. It is one of my all time favs and has Psysics & Shifters. Keri Arthur’s Riley Jenson series is another great shifter series. Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series is also a good Urban Fantasy shifters series.

  3. I would recommend Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series, particularly the first 5.

The Others I don’t read because I first started reading them when the author was still at Ellora’s Cave and I dont’ like the series anymore, though I kept trying. If you are not biased by the original tone of the series (like I am) it may be a good one to try, though. It’s laced with humor, just like Shelly Laurenston’s, though I think in that department, Laurenston’s are “funnier”.

I enjoyed Nina Bangs’ Gods of the Nights series, she also has a humorous series involving shifters and vampires (MacKenzie Vampires).

I have to take a look at my collection. My memory is crappy.

  4. Ilona Andrea is excellent. Rich world building and a hero and heroine I adore. Brilliant. Faith Hunter has a great paramormal series called Jane Yellowrock. Awesome and ballsey heroine. Nalini Singhs angel series. Maybe the Chloe Neil series? The first two are the best IMHO. Best writing, best worlds and heroines who are kick ass. 🙂

  5. Dana Bell, Vivian
arend, and Moira Rogers all have great shifters and are at Samhain pub. Also Shelly Laurenston’s rock

another vote for the Dragon Kin series (lots of action & humor, couldn’t put the books down). Colleen Callahan’s dragonfury series (3 books out so far) & Aline Hunter’s series (Omega Mine & Enemy Mine) are books I’d recommend. Dohner’s New Species series is one of my faves though agree not a shifter book (dna altered w/ animal dna by evil pharmacy lab). recommend with all these that the series be read in order as the books tend to build on each other (though you won’t be completely lost if you don’t). Shannon Butcher’s Sentinels War series sucked me in big time last year (definitely read in order to avoid feeling lost)

  7. – Shelly Laurenston/GA Aiken is great, but her humor isn’t for everyone. Her characters are over-the-top outrageous. You either love her or not. I would definitely recommend giving her a try because if you like one, you’ll like them all.
-Vivian Arend writes a very cute series about wolves.
-Dana Marie Bell’s Halle Puma series and Eve Langlais’ Furry United coalition and Freakin’ series are both very funny shifter series and they are novella length, so perfect for a quick fix.
-I loved Keri Arthur’s Riley Jensen series. The heroine is half-werewolf and half-vamp.
-The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is my favorite UF series. There is all kinds of amazing mythology and shifters are prominent because Kate’s love interest is Curran, a lion shifter aka The Beast Lord.
-I like Lauren Dane’s De La Vega cats series. She also has a wolf series (Cascadia I think), but I haven’t read it.
-Carrie Vaughn’s werewolf Kitty series starts out really good and I enjoyed it through book 6 or so, but haven’t kept up with the last few.

Wow, you’ve read a lot of book! LOL. Ok, here are some recommendations:

Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels Series – I’m not the first to mention these books because they are fantastic. Great world building, a smart heroine and CURRAN!

Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville Series – Yes a werewolf named Kitty, gotta love it.

Ok, now for some author’s that have not been mentioned:

Kim Harrison’s The Hollows (or Rachel Morgan) series is one of the best I’ve ever read. It might take a bit to get through the first book because of all that goes on but I promise if you stick with them the will become one of your favorites. Book 11 just came out with 2 more and the series will be done. Rachel is a witch and her best friends are a vampire and pixy. Lots of action and humor too.

Devon Monk’s Allie Beckstrom series is excellent and revolves around magic users.

Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series is outstanding and since you’ve read the Highlanders you can jump right in.

Darynda Jones’ Charlie Davidson series is great too, lots of humor and Reyes Farrow, OMG!

Yasmine Galenorn’s Otherworld Series has a little bit of everything. It’s about 3 sisters (a witch, shifter, and vampire) and each book is from a different sisters POV. Very good.

Ok, these are all books about Vampires but all are excellent!

JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series
    Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires series
Keri Arthur’s Riley Jensen series (half vampire half werewolf)
    Jaye Wells’ Sabina Kane series
Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress (Cat & Bones) series (Bones is one of the sexiest Vampires, ever!)
