The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family--rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn't be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them--of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He's also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama--an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

This book has been on my TBR list for the longest time and I’m glad that I finally picked it up because Jennifer Ashley did a fantastic job of writing this book and keeping me, the reader, invested in the story and the characters.

Ian Mackenzie is mad, at least that’s what everyone is saying but Beth can’t stay away from him. He’s the most interesting man she’s met in a long time and there’s something about him that keeps her coming back for more. It might be his possessive nature or the way that her insides melt whenever she sees him but whatever it is, she craves him and despite what others have advised of her, she finds herself drawn to Ian and then before she’s ready, married to him.

Ian Mackenzie never forgets anything. He’s become an asset to his brother in business but he doesn’t mind because his brothers saved him from a fate far worse than remembering things. When he meets Beth, he can’t help but want her and he does whatever he needs to do to have her. Even if that includes stealing her from her fiance’.

This book was a definite treat for me and exactly what I was in the mood for when I picked it up. I’m anxious to read the next book in the series so I need to hurry up and catch up on review books so that I can reward myself with Mac and Isabella’s story. Jennifer Ashley has definitely did plenty good with the introduction of the Mackenzie family and they’re all such colorful characters that I’m itching for more. Fans of historical romance will definitely enjoy this book so if you haven’t tried her books out, fix that pronto because they’re full of awesome.

  1. I REALLY loved this one – I just really connected with it and just earlier today was thinking books I enjoy as much as I did this one only come along once a year or so – if I’m lucky.

I’ve enjoyed the other ones in the series, but this one stands apart. Ian is just shiver worthy, all that focus on one person – see – shiver.

  2. I adored this book. It took FOREVER to get me to read it and I have to admit the others in the series didn’t do nearly as much for me as this one did. But, that being said this is a keeper for me! Glad you like it!

Fab, fab, fab – a really engrossing read.

Didn’t enjoy book 2 and gave up on the rest of the series . . but this one is a Keeper ☺

This was the first Jennifer Ashley book I ever read. The hype was correct when so many bloggers said it was a different kind of book. I didn’t like book 2 as much, but I thought Cameron’s book was quite good, too.
