Monthly Reads: May

Posted June 6, 2011 by Casee in Features, Giveaways | 25 Comments

Casee: There just aren’t any excuses. When I look at Goodreads and see my total for 2011 I just want to cringe. Or puke. Or cringe and then puke. This month there really isn’t any excuse. I could cite personal reasons. Travel. Whatever. The fact of the matter is that as soon as I pick up a book, it takes me away from every problem I have. I need to get a couple of post-its, write it down and put them where I would often seen them. My cringe worthy total for the month of May was…five.

1. Vampire in Atlantis by Alyssa Day (4/5)
2. Warrior Betrayed by Addison Fox (4/5)
3. When You Dare by Lori Foster (3/5)
4. Inside by Brenda Novak (4/5)
5. Trace of Fever by Lori Foster (3.5/5)

Numbers aside, I didn’t have much luck with quality though I guess three 4/5’s are pretty good. I did read both Lori Foster books with a jaded heart, but I’m nothing if not fair. Ha.

Holly: I had a great reading month. I guess I was making up for Casee’s lack of reading. I went on two binges this month: Lauren Dane and Shiloh Walker. I didn’t really mean to read as many as I did, it just happened that way. My total for the month? 31. To be fair, many of these were really short.

1. The Huntress by Shiloh Walker 3.5/5
2. I’ll Be Hunting You by Shiloh Walker 3.75/5
3. Rafe and Sheila by Shiloh Walker 3.5/5
4. Ben and Shadoe by Shiloh Walker 3.5/5
5. Byron and Kit by Shiloh Walker 3.5/5
6. Eli and Sarel by Shiloh Walker 2/5
7. Jonathan and Lori by Shiloh Walker 3.75/5
8. Declan and Tori by Shiloh Walker 3/5
9. Once and Again by Lauren Dane 4/5
10. Kissing Comfort by Jo Goodman 4.25/5
11. The Naked Truth by Lilly Cain 3.75/5
12. Tangled Past by Leah Braemel 3.75/5
13. Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
14. Yours to Keep by Shannon Stacey 4.5/5
15. Through the Wall by Keri Ford 3.75/5
16. To Do List by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
17. Triad by Lauren Dane 3.5/5
18. Revelation by Lauren Dane 4/5
19. Trinity by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
20. Standoff by Lauren Dane 4/5
21. Wolf Unbound by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
22. Tri Mates by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
23. Enforcer by Lauren Dane 3.75/5
24. Fated by Lauren Dane 4/5
25. Lord Ruin by Carolyn Jewel 4.25/5
26. Playing Dirty by Susan Andersen 4.25/5
27. Baby, Come Home by Stephanie Bond 1.5/5
28. Resisting Mr. Tall, Dark and Texan by Christine Rimmer 3.75/5
29. A Daring Proposition by Jennifer Greene 3.5/5
30. Pride and Pleasure by Sylvia Day 4/5
31. Should’ve Been a Cowboy by Vicki Lewis Thompson 3/5

My favorite read of the month was probably Playing Dirty by Susan Andersen. I’ve been waiting years for it to be released and it didn’t disappoint. Honorable mentions go to Yours to Keep by Shannon Stacey and Kissing Comfort by Jo Goodman. Both were excellent. My least favorite read of the month was Baby, Come home by Stephanie Bond. I absolutely hated the heroine. Hated.

Rowena: It was a good reading month for me. I got a lot more reading done in May then I have in a while and I was super stoked about it. Here’s what I read last month:

  1. The Sweetest Thing by Christine Mandelski. (3 out of 5)
  2. He’s So Not Worth It by Kieran Scott. (4 out of 5)
  3. Incredibly Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. (2.75 out of 5)
  4. The Summer Before Boys by Nora Raleigh Baskin. (3 out of 5)
  5. Chasing Fire by Nora Roberts. (3 out of 5)
  6. The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter. (4 out of 5)
  7. So Much Closer by Susane Colasanti. (2.75 out of 5)
  8. My Misadventures as a Teenage Rock Star by Joyce Raskin. (3 out of 5)
  9. Too Wicked to Love by Debra Mullins. (3.5 out of 5)
  10. What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen. (4.5 out of 5)
  11. Blood Red Road by Moira Young. (3 out of 5)
  12. Ten Miles Past Normal by Frances O’Roark Dowell. (3 out of 5)
  13. Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath. (3.5 out of 5)
  14. Soldier on her Doorstep by Soraya Lane. (2 out of 5)
  15. The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder. (5 out of 5)

My favorite read of the month is The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder but I’m actually going to be giving away a copy of Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath. It’s Ainsley’s book and though it’s not out yet, I’ll pre-order it for the winner. Lots of YA reading this month (I’m in that YA mood that won’t go away) but I feel that changing, I’m itching for a good historical romance so I’ll be digging into my historical stash over here. I can’t wait!

This month we’re giving away:

Inside by Brenda Novak (pre-order)
Yours to Keep by Shannon Stacey (ebook only)
Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath (pre-order)

If you want to be entered to win, leave a comment on this post telling us what your favorite – and least favorite – reads of the month were. Also, be sure to tell us what book you’re interested in reading. You can put your name in for more than one book, but you’ll only be allowed to win one, so choose wisely.

So…what was your favorite read of the month? And your least favorite?

I read a very respectable 37 books this month. My favorite? Don’t be silly – what about the top 5? Dragon Bound, River Marked, Magic Slays, Hounded by Kevin Hearne (liked it even more than I thought I would), and Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan.

The two books that disappointed me the most were The Restorer by Amanda Stevens, and Wilder’s Mate by Moira Rogers. It wasn’t that either of them wasn’t enjoyable, because they were; it was that I’d heard such good things that my expectations were very high.

I really enjoyed Unlocked, but I really didn’t like Love at First Flight.

I’d like to read Yours to Keep.

Best read – not quite a romance, but definitely romantic. Jacqueline Carey “Namaah’s Curse”. Worst read – Laura Lee Ghurke “The Wedding of the Season”. Had some good reviews, but is a DNF for me. Just hated the hero, and didn’t buy into “still crazy for him despite the pain and abandonment” heroine.

  5. I didn’t read very many books this month but my fav was Hex Hall. Everything I read this month was pretty good. No duds! I’ve heard great things about Shannon Stacey! bookfaredelights at gmail

  6. Hmmmmmmm favorite and least favorite? For May… O_o is it very so much sad I don’t remember? Favorite would be… um, according to goodreads (which admittedly I’m not very up to date with) I only read 2 books, so Rogue for a Night was my favorite, Bliss was my least favorite.
    That’s not too damning right?

As for which book I’d like… Shannon’s most, otherwise Lorraine’s. Hopefully that ebook comes out the same day as print, cuz I’ll be out and about on release day 😀

  11. Hands down favorite read this month was Kiss of Snow by Nalini Singh. My least favorite was When The Devil Whistles by Rick Acker. It was a free Kindle read and a thriller, which I admit is a genre that I don’t read all that often.

Would love to read Shannon’s new ebook, Yours to Keep.

Favorite of the month was an oldie, Lightning that Lingers by Sharon and Tom Curtis (Laura London.) It was just wonderful. I’m having trouble finding a least fav, it was a really good month! I guess I’ll go with Soul Ties by Karen van der Zee, because she’s normally so good.

I guess I’ll go with the buzz and put my name in for Stacy. 🙂

Lots of good books in May, but my favorites were Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison, Tangled Threads by Jennifer Estep and The Perfect Dish by Kristen Painter. Looking over my ratings, I had nothing below a C+, so no duds this month.

My favourite book of the month would be Exposure by Therese Fowler. It certaintly resonated with me the most. Not surprising as I have already enjoyed her two previous novels.

The least favourite would be Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. It simply wasn’t what I expected. I’m willing to give to read the following novels in the series to see how the series develop.

I’m interested in winning Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath. It’s a fantastic, emotional series and Ican’t wait to read the latest.

  25. I’ve read ten books last month which is quite a lot for me. My favourite was A lot Like Love from Julie James. I loved it! Why did I wait so long to read it? I only read fairly good books. I was on a Erin McCarthy binge and read a lot of her contemporaries and loved them, too.
I’d like to win Yours To Keep by Shannon Stacey, please. Thank you!
