Summer is just around the corner and you can tell by the amount of summer themed books coming out. The Summer of Firsts and Lasts follows three sisters at the same summer camps, dealing with their firsts and lasts of everything in one summer. The oldest sister, Calla, works at the summer camp that she’s been going to for the past few years. She loved attending the camp and now she has an opportunity to work behind the scenes at the camp and she’s thrilled to be given this chance, even though it means that she won’t get to spend as much time with her summer crush, Duncan.
Violet is the middle sister who meets up with a boy she knew from a few summers ago. They have this unspoken connection that she feels every time their eyes meet across the way and she knows that it’s real.
The youngest sister Daisy is dealing with her first summer romance and trying to find her own way at summer camp without her sisters there to handle everything for her. Things aren’t going as well as Daisy expected when her summer friends start acting weird and she becomes the target for their pranks and summer games.
In this book, there is so much going on and it would have been easy to get lost but McVoy does a great job of making everything clear. She also does a great job of making each sister and their problems feel real. Each sister got a fair amount of page time and their stories unfold easily and slowly just like summer does and I enjoyed it.
Of the three sisters, Daisy was my favorite because it seemed to me that she was going through the most and needed her sisters more than they needed her but she dealt with her problems on her own and came out on top of it all. Violet was the most selfish out of the three of them and there were times toward the end when I was hoping things with her and James would fall through and her heart would get broken because she got on my nerves the most. The whole thing with Calla and Duncan made my heart trip up because I’m a sucker for that unrequited love story.
Overall, the story was a good one but because it unraveled so slowly, there were times when it was so easy for me to put the book down and read something else. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and I enjoyed seeing the sisters interact with each other but the pace of the story was too slow at parts and again, it was just too easy to fall out of the story.

Lovely review, and I agree about the slow unraveling 🙁 I tried to read this one but couldn’t get past the first few chapters, since they seemed kind of slow.
Oh you didn’t finish it, Alex? I can see why some people wouldn’t finish it. It was a little slow to pick up but I was too nosy not to finish it. Violet got on my hot dang nerves but I was glad to read more about Daisy and Calla.
