Tracy’s review of River Marked (Mercy Thompson #6) by Patricia Briggs

Car mechanic Mercy Thompson has always known there was something different about her, and not just the way she can make a VW engine sit up and beg. Mercy is a shapeshifter, a talent she inherited from her long-gone father. She’s never known any others of her kind. Until now.

An evil is stirring in the depths of the Columbia River-one that her father’s people may know something about. And to have any hope of surviving, Mercy and her mate, the Alpha werewolf Adam, will need their help…

Mercy and Adam are on their honeymoon when things start to go bad. Not with their relationship – that is strong and vital – but with people disappearing. It seems that there’s a monster in the Columbia river – that they just happened to be camping next to – that is eating and killing people. Who needs to take care of business? Why, Mercy, of course.

But it’s not like Mercy is doing things out of the goodness of her heart, although that does come in to play at one point, she’s helping people who have a lot to do with her heritage and though it’s not something she would choose to take care of herself, she doesn’t feel like there’s a choice.

It’s incredibly difficult to tell you about the book without giving you spoilers, I’ve discovered!! I can tell you this though, it’s wonderful. Though the book isn’t quite as action packed as previous books it still has all the incredible writing that we’ve come to expect from Ms. Briggs as well as a really great story.

Since Mercy and Adam are on their honeymoon we get to see them together almost exclusively and let me tell you how much I loved that. I love Mercy’s personality and the way that Adam copes with having to squelch his uber possessive side while dealing with his mate and wife makes things interesting. That doesn’t mean he’s not possessive – I love him that way! – but he knows that Mercy wouldn’t deal well with him taking over completely and the push and pull of the relationship really is awesome to witness.

The book contains love, long-time friendships, pack bonds, new friendships and family and it was all wrapped up in an incredible story that I will definitely be reading again in the future.

Rating: 5 out of 5
