Main Character: Jane Roberts
Series: L.A. Candy, Book 1
Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Goodreads

Los Angeles is all about the sweet life: hot clubs, cute guys, designer . . . everything. Nineteen-year-old Jane Roberts can’t wait to start living it up. She may be in L.A. for an internship, but Jane plans to play as hard as she works, and has enlisted her BFF Scarlett to join in the fun.

When Jane and Scarlett are approached by a producer who wants them to be on his new series, a “reality version of Sex and the City,” they can hardly believe their luck. Their own show? Yes, please!

Soon Jane is TV’s hottest star. Fame brings more than she ever imagined possible for a girl from Santa Barbara free designer clothes, the choicest tables at the most exclusive clubs, invites to Hollywood premieres and she’s lapping up the VIP treatment with her eclectic entourage of new pals. But those same friends who are always up for a wild night are also out for a piece of Jane’s spotlight.

In a city filled with people chasing after their dreams, it’s not long before Jane…

I read this book for the first when it first came out because I requested the book from my contacts over at Avon because I was a huge Lauren Conrad fan and still am but this series has totally fallen off my radar so I’m here to bring it back.

Reading this book again after so much time was like reading it for the first time. It’s got all of the glitz and glam of Hollywood and though I’m not a big fan of the cut throat Hollywood lifestyle that I’ve read in books but this book wasn’t done up too bad. Reading this book was like watching an episode of The Hills and since I was a huge fan of the show, I was all about that in this book.

This book follows Jane Roberts and Scarlet Harp as they go from regular no name people off the street to reality tv’s hit sensation. We see them learning for themselves what it’s like to live in the spotlight and to live in the big city bright lights of Hollywood. Now if you’ve watched The Hills series finale with Brody walking off the set the way that he did, it left you with the impression that maybe the show was scripted (oh who are we kidding? Still, I loved that show) and you see further proof of that here in this book. They had to re-tape situations over and over again to get the footage that they wanted and well, it was like getting a behind the scenes sneak peek at the whole production and while I enjoyed it, it wasn’t the best thing since slice bread.

For me, the story served as reminding me just how much I liked The Hills. It reminded me how much I couldn’t stand Heidi and reading this book again made me remember how much I loved watching Lauren Conrad grow into the woman she became on The Hills since I was an avid fan of hers when she was on Laguna Beach and I hated Kristin Cavallari because she was such a b word.

Once again, I hated Gaby and Madison. Gaby totally reminds me of Audrina or as Perez Hilton calls her, “Ceiling Eyes” and this time around, they got on my freaking nerves. The love triangle between Braden, Jane and Jesse was a delight to read about as well. Overall, the story was good but it wasn’t the fantabulous read that I was expecting (the first time around) but I will tell you this, reading this has increased my desire to read the other books in the series so I guess I’ll just have to get on that, won’t I?

For all of my Mom friends out there, I’d give this book a rating of:

There’s a lot of adult content in here so I’d say if you wouldn’t let your kids watch The Hills then you probably shouldn’t let them read this one.

..and that’s your scoop!

  1. Well, my sister is a huge L.C. fan, I admit I never got it. I did buy these books for her because she wanted them, and whenever she wants to read a book I enable her – she doesn’t read nearly enough! – but I don’t know.

Maybe because I never liked Laguna Beach or The Hills, it never ocurred to me to read it. But my sis seems to like it. She has read up to book 2, I think.

  2. I don’t think I can read this book, even though I’ve heard it’s decent. I know it’s completely bias of me but I hate when “stars” write books. Especially reality/fake reality stars. Aggravates me how easily they get book deals just because of their names (yes, I’m looking at you, Snookie & Hillary Duff!). *end mini rant*

    But thanks for the review!
