Review and Giveaway: Unearthly by Cynthia Hand.

Main Character: Clara Gardner
Love Interest: Tucker
Series: Unearthly, Book 1 (I don’t know what the series is called yet)
Author: Website|Facebook|Twitter|Goodreads

In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees . . . .

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she’s part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn’t easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there’s another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara’s less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Ever since I read the blurb for this book, I wanted it. I wanted to devour it and the first chance that I got, I did exactly that.

I devoured this book in one work day and I was not feeling bad about it. It’s hard to feel bad about blowing off work when you have such an awesome book to read and this book was fantastic. I enjoyed it from the beginning of the book to the end of the book. For me, there wasn’t that beginning hump where there’s a big ol’ info dump where the author is setting the book up and it takes a little bit for the book to pick up and keep your interest. Right from the beginning, I wanted to keep turning the pages.

This story follows Clara Gardner from California to Wyoming where she meets Christian, the guy from her visions, the guy who has something to do with her purpose in this world. Every angel blood has a purpose and Christian is tied to Clara’s purpose and it’s because of this that Clara and her family pack up their bags and move to the wilds of Wyoming to help Clara figure out what she’s supposed to do to fulfill her purpose.

Hand did a phenomenal job of building a world of characters that I wanted to know more about. There wasn’t a character in this book that I didn’t find interesting. For me, what makes a book spectacular is my ability to connect with the characters and Hand did a wonderful job of making me connect with each and every single one of her characters. From Clara to Christian to Tucker to Maggie and Jeffrey to Angela and Wendy, I wanted to know more about each of them. Hand’s writing made me feel as if I was a part of the story and I could see everything come to life through her words. I could see Clara’s wings as clearly as if she showed herself right before my very eyes and I could feel Clara’s frustration surrounding her visions and her purpose. Everything was just so real to me.

So much happens in this book that I’m anxious for more. I have so many questions about this series and after stalking Cynthia Hand’s blog, I’m happy to see that there will be a sequel. This makes me so happy because I want to know more. I want to see what happens with Clara. I want to know more about Christian. I want to know more about Angela. I want know what Jeffrey was doing while everything was going down and I want to know more about the colors of everyone’s wings. I want to know what Maggie’s purpose was, I want to know more about Wendy and Tucker. I just want so much more and I’m glad that we’re going to get it (in the form of another book).

If you’re looking for a book with great characters and a storyline that will keep you turning the pages faster than you can blink then this is the book for you. Cynthia Hand introduces a world that will make a lot of YA readers happy and I think this is a winner of a series and I’m so very anxious for more.
