Holly‘s review of Simply Irresistible (Seattle Chinooks, Book 1) by Rachel Gibson

Georgeanne Howard, charm school graduate and Southern belle extraordinaire, leaves her fiance at the altar when she realizes she just can’t marry a man old enough to be her grandfather, no matter how rich he is. John Kowalsky unknowingly helps her escape, and only when it’s too late does he realize that he’s absconded with his boss’s bride. At the height of his hockey career, this bad boy isn’t looking to be anybody’s savior but his own, no matter how beautiful this angel may be. But a long night stretches ahead of them–a night too sultry to resist temptation.

When Georgeanne and John meet again, she is on her way to becoming Seattle’s domestic darling and he is past his hellraising days. But he is shocked to learn that their single unforgettable night in paradise produced a daughter, and he is determined to be part of her life. Georgeanne has loved John since the moment she jumped into his little red Corvette seven years ago, but she doesn’t want to risk her heart again. Is he really a changed man? And will he risk the wrath of his boss, and one final chance at glory, to prove that this time his love will be everlasting?

This is one of my all time favorite Gibson books. Everyone talks about her other hockey books, but this one gets overlooked far too often. I adore John and Georgie both.

The heroine isn’t shown in a very flattering light at the beginning of the novel. She’s getting ready to marry a man 50yrs her senior for his money, can barely read and looks like a centerfold pinup. Gibson really makes her a truly sympathetic character, though. She isn’t the type to feel sorry for herself, or wallow in her misery. She puts on a positive attitude and tries to make the best of whatever bad situation she finds herself in. Because of the way she was raised the reader can really relate to her, even though it doesn’t seem like it in the beginning.

John has his own demons to face. He’s struggling with the pain of losing his wife. He drinks too much in the beginning, and is selfish and rude a lot of the time. But he grows a lot over the course of the novel, too. He puts his life back together and deals with his issues as best he can. Because Georgie left his boss at the alter, John is put in a sticky position. He must choose between his career and her. In the beginning that’s not a hard choice to make, but as the novel progresses it becomes clear that his feelings for Georgie and her daughter are stronger than he imagined. His internal struggle was at times amusing and frustrating, but I loved him for all the thought he put into it.

John’s relationship with his daughter was yet another high point in the novel. He’s a man’s man. Whenever he’s thought about having children, they’ve always been male. He has no idea what to do with a girly-girl who loves makeup, dresses and all things female. Some of the best scenes in the novel are with him and Lexie getting to know each other. I loved that he really tried with her. He wasn’t disappointed about having a girl, or trying to force her to accept him – he made a real effort. It was also very amusing to see how well she played him. Smart girl, our Lexie.

The secret baby plot is one I enjoy but only if it’s done well. It isn’t done well very often. Gibson is one of the few who can make it work well. Which she did here. I completely understood Georgeanne’s reasons for not telling John about their baby. Even though I hurt for him, knowing he missed so much of his daughter’s life, I couldn’t be angry at Georgie for not telling him.

That’s not to say I wasn’t annoyed with both of them at times. John could be a complete jerk at times, and Georgie was stubborn and almost too-independent. But even though I got frustrated every now and again, it was never enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story.

The short secondary romance between Hugh Minor, one of John’s teammates, and Mae, Georgie’s best friend, seemed kind of superfluous. I enjoyed it at first, seeing small glimpses of them together, their bickering and attraction. But there wasn’t enough time spent on them to make the relationship believable. One minute they were arguing and the next they were in love. It didn’t work.

Overall this is a very emotionally compelling novel, but also laced with humor and tenderness. This is Gibson at her best.

Author Spotlight: Excerpt – Any Man of Mine by Rachel Gibson

Posted October 14, 2010 by Rowena in Features, Promotions | 9 Comments

I’m giddy with excitement here because the kind folks over at Avon gifted us with an excerpt for Rachel Gibson‘s upcoming new release, Any Man of Mine. The only downside to this is that a cover hasn’t been released yet but still, I’m in Heaven right now. More Rachel Gibson? Yay us!

I’m doing my happy dance here. Here at Book Binge, we love us some Rachel Gibson and it’s with absolute pleasure that I share this excerpt with you guys.

Check it out:

Sam Leclaire was a good-looking son of a bitch. Everyone thought so. Everyone from sportswriters to soccer moms.

The girl wrapped up in his sheets thought so, too. Although she wasn’t really a girl. She was a woman.

“I don’t see why I can’t go.”

Sam glanced up from the knot in his tie and looked through the mirror at the supermodel in his bed. Her name was Veronica Del Toro, but she was known by just her first name. Like Tyra and Heidi and Giselle.

“Because I didn’t know you were going to be in town,” he explained for the tenth time. “Bringing a guest at this late date would be rude.” Which wasn’t the real reason.

“But I’m Veronica.”

Now there. There was the real reason. She was rude and narcissistic. Not that he held that against anyone. He could be rude and narcissistic himself, but unlike the stories written about him, he really did know when to behave.

“I won’t eat much.”

Try not at all. That’s one of the things that irritated him about Veronica. She never ate. She ordered food like she was starving, but she pushed it around her plate.

Sam slid up the knot and tilted his chin to one side as he buttoned down the collar. “I already called you a cab.” Through the mirror he watched Veronica rise from his bed and walk toward him. She moved across his carpet as if she were on the catwalk. All long legs and arms and hardly a jiggle.

“When are you going to be back?” she asked as she wrapped her arms around his waist. She rested her chin on his shoulder and looked at him through dark brown eyes.

Sam tilted his head to one side and, as he buttoned the last collar point, he glanced at the clock on his nightstand. It was already half past six and the wedding started at seven. He really hadn’t had time to meet Veronica. But she wasn’t in town that often and she’d promised a quickie. He should have known better. “Late. When do you fly out?”

“In the morning.” She sighed and slid her long hands up his dress shirt to his hard pecs. “I could
wait.”

He turned, and her palms slid to his waist. “I don’t know when I’ll get back. This thing could run real late.” Although with the start of the regular season just around the corner, he doubted it. He pushed her dark hair behind her shoulder. “Call me the next time you’re in Seattle.”

“That could be months, and by then you’ll be on the road playing hockey.” She dropped her hands and moved toward the bed.

He watched her skinny behind as she stepped into her tiny panties. There were a lot of things to like about Veronica. He just hoped she didn’t get all clingy on him. “We can always meet up on the road again.”

“True.” She reached for a black T-shirt, pulling it over her head before stepping into a pair of jeans.

“But by then you’ll have a black eye.”

He grinned. “True.” He grabbed his suit jacket and slid his arms inside. Last season he’d hooked up with her in Pittsburgh. That night against the Penguins, he’d scored a goal, spent four minutes in the sin bin for a double minor, and got his first major shiner of the season. Maybe she’d bring him the same sort of luck this year. He reached for his wallet and shoved it into the back pocket of his khaki trousers.

After Veronica slid her feet into a pair of pumps, they walked from the bedroom of Sam’s downtown loft. Gray shadows hugged the scarce furnishings as misty sunlight cast dull patterns across the wood floor.

Sam held the front door open for Veronica, then locked it behind him. He moved down the hall and his thoughts turned to the game in less than a month against San Jose. The Sharks had been knocked out of the first round of the playoffs last season, but that didn’t mean a guaranteed win for the Chinooks in this season’s opener. Not by a long shot. The Sharks would be hungry and some of the Chinooks had partied a little too hard during the off season. Johan and Logan were each carrying ten extra pounds around the middle. Vlad was drinking like a sailor on leave and the organization had yet to officially name a new captain.

“I love weddings,” Veronica said through a sigh as they moved to the elevator. Everyone assumed Walker Brooks would be captain, but nothing had been announced.

The elevator doors opened and they stepped inside. “Don’t you?”

“Don’t I what?” He pushed the button to the lobby.

“Love weddings.”

“Not particularly.” Weddings were about as much fun as getting his cup rung. They rode to the bottom floor in silence and Sam placed his hand in the small of Veronica’s back as they walked across the lobby. Two heavy glass and stainless steel doors slid open and a yellow cab waited by the curb.

He kissed her good-bye, then said, “Call me the next time you’re in town,” as he shut the cab door.

Misty clouds clung to the Seattle skyline as Sam walked to the corner and headed two blocks toward Fourth Avenue and the Rainier Club. Life was good.

Last season the Seattle Chinooks won the Stanley Cup and Sam’s name would forever be inscribed on hockey’s highest prize. The memory of holding the cup over his head as he skated in front of the hometown crowd brought a smile to his lips.

Within several moments, he caught sight of the old, exclusive club with its aged brick and carefully trimmed lawn that reeked of money. His professional life was on a high. Through blood, sweat, and hard work, he’d reached every goal he’d ever set for himself. He had more money then he’d ever thought he’d make in one lifetime and his personal life was pretty good, too. Women loved him and he loved them back. Probably a little too much sometimes.

He walked beneath the Rainier Club’s black awning and a doorman greeted him. The inside
of the prestigious club was so stuffy that he had a sudden urge to take off his shoes as when he’d been a kid and his mom got a new carpet. A few of the guys hung out at the bottom of a wide staircase looking a little uneasy, but otherwise good in their designer suits and summer tans. In two months, several of them would be sporting black eyes and a few stitches.

“Nice of you to make it,” forward Daniel Holstrom said as he approached.

Harp music drifted down the stairs as Sam peeled back the cuff of his shirt and looked at his Rolex.

“Ten minutes to spare,” he said. “What are you all waiting for?”

“Frankie and Logan aren’t here yet,” goalie Marty Darche answered.

“Savage make it?” Sam asked, referring to the groom.

“I spotted him about ten minutes ago. First time I’ve ever seen him break a sweat off the ice. He’s probably nervous that the bride has come to her senses and is halfway to Vashon.”

Sam laughed as a shiny auburn ponytail and smooth profile caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. He turned. His laughter stopped. A woman moved across the lobby toward the front doors, talking into the tiny microphone in front of her mouth. A black sweater hugged her body and a little battery pack was clipped to her black pants.

Sam’s brows lowered and acid settled in the pit of his stomach. If there was one woman on the planet who hated his guts, it was the woman disappearing through the front doors.

Daniel put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, Sam, isn’t that your wife?”

Marty turned toward the front. “You have a wife?”

“Ex-wife.” The acid chewed its way up toward Sam’s esophagus. “She’s my ex-wife.”

Daniel laughed like he thought something was real funny. “Does being married for three days really count?”

*squeal* We’re getting Sam’s story you guys! Yay us!

Who’s as excited for this book as we are? Mark your calendars dear readers because the new Rachel Gibson comes out at the end of April 2011. Woo freaking hoo!

Review: Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti.

Posted October 14, 2010 by Rowena in Reviews | 0 Comments

Main Characters: Lani, Jason, Erin
Series: None

Lani and Erin are lifelong best friends — and total opposites. Lani’s a down-to-earth Taurus; Erin’s a fiery Leo. Lani likes to do her own thing; Erin prefers an entourage. They’ve always had wildly different tastes, from pizza toppings to guys.

That is, until Erin starts dating Jason.

From the minute Lani meets Jason, she can’t deny the amazing connection she feels with him. It’s like they’ve known each other their whole lives. She’s not sure if he feels it, too — but even if he does, he’s off-limits. Lani’s determined to ignore her feelings for Jason, no matter how powerful they are, rather than hurt her best friend.

Then Erin goes away for the summer — and Jason seems to appear everywhere Lani turns. How long can she keep running from the guy who just might be the love of her life?

Ames reviewed this book here on The Book Scoop and I’ve been wanting to read this book for what seems like EVER and when she came down from Canada, she gave me the book to read. How sweet is she? My favorite! =)

Susane Colasanti did a wonderful job of sucking me right into this story without trouble. Right from page one, I was all about this book. Immediately, I loved Lani and wanted her to somehow be happy and felt for her when against her better judgment, she started falling for her best friend’s boyfriend. She was in a hard place and yet she kept a reign on her feelings for Jason because she didn’t want to hurt Erin. Sometimes, love conquers all…even when you don’t want it to. It’s hard to stay away from the one person that you were meant to be with. Jason and Lani are perfect for each other, they’re great together and even though you know about that unspoken friend rule, you still wanted Lani to end up with Jason.

I ate up Jason and Lani’s romance. It was the cutest thing to me and with each passing chapter, I wanted more from them. Jason was the most adorable thing in this book and my heart went out to him when he was trying to do the right thing.

My only gripe with this story, well my two gripes with this story was 1) Erin and 2) the way Lani just catered to Erin after the crap hit the fan. The crap that Erin got away with in this book made me want to punch her in the face…multiple times. Yeah, I understood that she was hurt because of the betrayal and I understand that she wanted to lash out at Lani but the lengths to which she let things get for Lani at school made me want to kick her where it hurts. Lani never wanted for any of those things to happen and she loved Erin enough to walk away from Jason for a while but when Erin gets back and she goes on her little rampage, I didn’t think she deserved Lani as a friend. Her selfishness made me want her to end up all alone forever and ever.

Then there was the way that Lani, who felt bad for hurting Erin let her dictate the way things were going to be from then on. I didn’t get how she could not want to hurt Erin but be okay with hurting Jason. It didn’t make sense to me. I mean, feel bad but you lost Erin already, why lose Jason as well? That part of the book made me scratch my head but I enjoyed the rest of the book too much to let those little minor things ruin it for me.

This book was a good contemporary YA romance that I think other contemporary fans will enjoy. Fans of Colasanti will rejoice at another engaging story and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone willing to give it a try. I enjoyed it a great deal.

..and that’s your scoop!

Review: Blood Trinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love

Posted October 14, 2010 by Casee in Reviews | 4 Comments

Genres: Urban Fantasy

Casee‘s review of Blood Trinity (Belador Series, Book 1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.

Supernatural warriors bound by an extraordinary code of honor face an ultimate test of loyalty in the exciting new paranormal thriller from New York Times bestselling authors Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.Atlanta has become the battlefield between human and demon. All her life, Evalle Kincaid has walked the line between the two. Her origins unknown, she’s on a quest to learn more about her past . . . and her future. When a demon claims a young woman in a terrifying attack and there’s no one else to blame, Evalle comes under suspicion. Now she’s on a deadly quest for her own survival. Through the sordid underground of an alternate Atlanta where nothing is as it seems to the front lines of the city, where her former allies have joined forces to hunt her, Evalle must prove her innocence or pay the ultimate price. But saving herself is the least of her problems if she doesn’t stop the coming apocalypse. The clock is ticking and Atlanta is about to catch fire. . . .

I didn’t expect to love this book. I expected to like it just because I generally enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon’s voice. I’m burnt out on the Dark Hunters (I still haven’t read No Mercy). The current series and/or books that she has out don’t really interest me. This one sounded intriguing enough to pick up, so that I did. When I first finished it, I felt like saying WTF, yo. Where the f was the romance? Where was the sexual tension that Kenyon is known for? Oh, I know that Dianna Love is also a part of this new writing duo, but as I’m more familiar with Kenyon I expected more of Kenyon. I either got more of Dianna Love or a whole new voice all together.

Just when you think there is not another supernatural world to be had, Kenyon and Love create a new one. In this one, there are Beladors. They are warriors that are extraordinary (aren’t they always?) and fight to protect humans from demons. Beladors can link to each other and become that much stronger to defeat their enemy. The only problem is that if one dies while linked, the whole lot of them die at the same time.

Evalle is half Belador, half not. It’s the half not part that has straddling two worlds. For her entire life she has fought for the Beldador race, but she will never be accepted for what she is; a half-breed. As long as there are “abominations” like her on the planet, there are a select few that won’t stop until she is dead. Now Evalle only has a few days to prove that she isn’t responsible for the death of a human. If she doesn’t, she’ll get put away “for her own good”. With precious little resources, Evalle not only has to prove her innocence, but she has to help the race that she thinks hates her.

There’s a rock (a pretty effing cool one) out there that is about to choose it’s master. Once it does, the world is pretty much doomed. The Belador’s want to stop it while their enemies want to find it and use it for their own fanatical purposes. Evalle has to work with a walking, talking lie detector. Someone that has as many secrets like her has a lot to hide and a lot to lose. Though she has friends that will go to bat for her, Evalle will never put those she loves in jeopardy.

So this is where the book finally got interesting; when they started looking for this mysterious rock. It had already found it’s owner who was really sad herself. She ended up falling in love with one of the bad guys that wasn’t really bad. That was so contrived it had “INSERT LOVE STORY HERE” written all over it. It was lame-o. I was really disappointed. While my romantic heart wanted to believe that it could happen, it was so obviously not meant to be there that it was laughable.

This isn’t really a romance. I would call it more of an Urban Fantasy. There’s definitely a love triangle going on. Evalle is afraid of men, but is now attracted to two different men which is huge for her. I really liked her as a heroine. When I finished the book, I really was leaning more toward a 3. After letting it sit with me for awhile, I can’t help but like it more. Evalle was a terrific heroine. She even had a pet gargoyle. I give it a 4 out of 5.

This book is available from Pocket Books. You can buy it here.
