Guest Review: Accidentally Demonic by Dakota Cassidy

Posted October 6, 2010 by Book Binge Guest Blogger in Reviews | 1 Comment

Genres: Paranormal Romance

When mild-mannered Casey Schwartz wakes up in jail with no memory of how she got there, she realizes two things: Something weird is going on, and Orange is definitely not her color. After her sister, Wanda, bails her out, Casey has more to deal with than a foggy memory–like abrupt mood swings and fireballs shooting from her fingertips. But things really go south when a vampire shows up on her doorstep.

Clayton Gunnersson is a seriously hot vampire. And seriously taken–by a demon in a ritual gone wrong. Clayton tried to free himself from his unwanted bond but spilled some demonic blood on Casey. So now Clayton’s spurned mate is sharing her demonic powers with Casey, and she’s not happy about it. Neither is Casey, who can’t escape this bizarre love triangle. It’s hard enought possessed by a demon. Falling for that demon’s boyfriend could get Casey killed–from the inside out.

It has been said that . . . Laughter is the best medicine. And for whatever ails you, Dakota Cassidy is the author for you. In a book that is based on a plot and story that involve some very serious, hell-bent-for-leather kind of stuff, the laugh-outloud kind of humor is not to be believed. Serious because it involves the life of a young woman who is just trying to find her way in life–belatedly, to be sure, but struggling to be her own person nevertheless. Funny, because Casey Swartz is made of stern stuff that erupts in razor-edged repartee and a mind that just won’t quit. Serious, because this story has characters straight out of Hell, but very funny because the interactions between vampires, werewolves, were-vampires, and demons is hilarious, crackling with fun and intelligence, and absolutely guaranteed to make any reader with a brain crack up throughout.

Casey has stumbled her way into adulthood, changing her college major repeatedly, trying to manage a wounded heart and libido, taking on a job that is really smothering her in so many ways, and as a result has distanced herself from her family. While chasing after her twin charges–the unforgettable Lia and Lita at a crowded nightclub, Clayton the vampire accidentally spills demon blood on Casey, and the effects are immediate as the blood sinks into her skin and her course in life, both the earthly and the eternal one, are changed forever. In the course of reuniting with her estranged sister, she discovers that her sister has been changed as well–into a were-vampire, now married to a vampire, and Wanda’s two best pals are Nina the vampire, and Marty the werewolf. What else can go wrong? Well . . . Casey finds out that the blood that marked and changed her belonged to Clayton demon mate, making her Clayton’s mate as well. She finds out that she can levitate and only Clayton can keep her earthbound. She throws fireballs whenever her temper gets out of control and she can even summon vermin of every kind. Holy cockroaches, Batman!! The situation keeps getting more and more complicated.

Clayton knows he is responsible for Casey’s new life, horrible though it may be, and he vows to keep her safe from the rage of his ertwhile demon mate. With the help of the vampire clan and a really funny and actually adorable demon ally named Darnell, Clayton seeks to figure out how he can be free of Hildegard and act on his attraction to Casey, growing closer to her, and knowing that either she or Hildegard, his despised demon mate, will celebrate their “anniversary” by drinking from him. The other will lose her tie to the earthly plane and will be consigned to Hell from that time on.

This is one very funny book. It is one of those paranomal, fantasy books that just has a marvelous way to getting under your literary skin, making it impossible to lay down once you’ve started reading it. I haven’t laughed this hard since I read The World According to Garp. It was irreverent, witty dialogue, ripping through the consciousness and so well done that it was never difficult to envision the scenario. Ms Cassidy has that wonderful capacity to put it out there, just as if the characters were standing right in front of you. There are so many surprises here and more than enough twists and turns in the plot and story line to keep one guessing. The push-pull between Clayton and Casey is the core of the story and out of that grows a relationship that is both heart-warming and scarey.

So even though it has been a few months since this book was released, be sure to get it and put it in your “To Be Read” pile. It, like all of Dakota Cassidy’s books, deserves to be read and enjoyed.

I give this novel a rating of 4.75 out of 5.

Review: Next Summer by Hailey Abbott.

Posted October 6, 2010 by Rowena in Reviews | 5 Comments

Main Characters: Beth, Kesli and Ella Tuttle
Series: Summer Boys Series, Book 2

Things are heating up again. Can you handle it?

The SUMMER BOYS girls are back on the beach for another dose of sizzling drama. Can soul mates Beth and George maintain their long-distance love affair, even while another boy is catching Beth’s eye? Will reformed bad girl Ella REALLY be able to change her wild ways? And can shy, smart Kelsi open herself up to love again after she’s had her heart broken? And what’s happening with Jamie on her summer writing program? Find out all this–and much more–in this sexy sequel.

Here’s the second book in the Summer Boys series by Hailey Abbott. I was curious to see how different (meaning better) this book would be compared to the first book which I enjoyed but didn’t exactly love. My problems in the first book (which you can read here) was the crap that Ella did and then the crap that Jamie did. Both of those girls were totally immature and they just got on my nerves. What’s funny is that in the first book, Beth was my favorite but in this book, it was Beth that I wanted to choke.

In the first book, we meet Beth and we see her fall for her best friend George. George was so great. You can see that he had some big time feelings for Beth but because he didn’t want to change the dynamic of their friendship unless it was something that Beth wanted as well, you couldn’t help but fall madly in love with him. We couldn’t and neither could Beth. Beth fell super hard for George and by the end of the summer, they got it right. The good thing about Beth and George’s summer lovin’ is that it didn’t end when summer was finished. They got to take their love home and nourish and strengthen it. So when the next summer comes and they’re both still going mighty strong, you just know that more cuteness was on its way, right?

Wrong.

George couldn’t go to Pebble Beach with the Tuttles because he had to work and Beth is not happy about that. While George is thinking about their future (and when I say future, I mean next school year and when Beth comes back, not happily ever after married kind of future), Beth is pouting because she’ll be all by herself this summer.

Umm, no you won’t because Ella and Kelsi will be there with you. Duh. But anyway, Beth starts the book off annoying me and as the story progressed, she continued to annoy me.

Then there’s Ella, Ella’s still carrying the secret of sleeping with her sister’s boyfriend last summer with her and a part of me is surprised that she hasn’t come clean about it with Kelsi but whatever. So they head up to Pebble Beach both swearing off boys for the summer. Ella wants the real thing while Kelsi is still smarting from last summer’s heart break that she doesn’t want to go through all of that again.

So they get to Pebble Beach and the drama begins.

Kelsi meets a guy named Tim and right off the bat, she’s judging him and being such a snob to him that I want Tim to find someone else because Kelsi was being a straight up b word for no apparent reason other than that she knows he’s a player and doesn’t want to give him the time a day (insert eye roll here).

Ella meets an undercover hottie who doesn’t know he’s hot but she does and she wants to make a move on him so that he can be her summer hottie and is confused when he totally rebuffs her and leaves her wondering, WTF?

Then there’s Beth. While at the beach, she meets a guy named Adam who she hits it off with. They become fast friends and because you know that things can’t just be like that between a girl and a boy, things get complicated fast between the two of these guys. It’s in this storyline that I’m disappointed in Beth because what she’s doing will not just hurt George but it’s going to hurt Adam too and the way she handled everything had me shaking my head because if you supposedly love someone…you don’t do anything that will hurt them and…she does.

The crap hits the fan when Kelsi finds out about Ella and Peter from last summer and while I was thinking, “FINALLY” I felt bad for Ella because yeah, she was sorry for it but I couldn’t help but take Kelsi and Beth’s side because what she did was pretty horrible. But as bad as I felt for Ella, I still didn’t want Kelsi to end up with Tim because she was such a b word to him and I wanted her to be all alone and learn her lesson about judging people without knowing a hot dang thing about them.

The whole thing in this book is everyone messes up and everyone deserved to be punished but I didn’t feel like any of these Tuttle girls were punished. Sure, they cried and were punks to each other but I didn’t feel that any of them were truly remorseful enough to get the easy make ups that they got.

After I finished the book, I shook my head. I don’t think I’ll be finishing this series because well, I don’t like these Tuttle girls. They’re immature little girls that play with boys feelings and in the end, get away with everything. Not my kind of folks. I can’t exactly say I hated this book but I didn’t love it either. So I’m giving it a C.

…and that’s your scoop,

Review and Book Giveaway: Love Bites by Adrienne Barbeau

Posted October 6, 2010 by Tracy in Reviews | 25 Comments

It’s only two weeks since Peter and Ovsanna faced off with the Cinema Slayer, and already life is getting complicated.

First there’s the werewolf attack. Then a mutilated body at the Sportsmen’s Lodge turns up. Not to mention the fact that several of Ovsanna’s clan members, including Orson Welles and Mary Pickford, are vying for attention. All of this makes it hard for Peter and Ovsanna to get together. And it doesn’t help that Ovsanna’s personal assistant and sometimes lover, Maral, will do anything to get Peter out of the picture.

Peter and Ovsanna have to fight for their relationship and their lives. Ovsanna enlists her clan, the Vampyres of Hollywood, to help battle a menagerie of supernatural beasts straight out of Alien vs. Predator. This isn’t a box-office ratings war, it’s a fight to the death.

Peter has asked Ovsanna out on a date. Well, not really a date, but having Christmas dinner with his family counts as something pretty personal. But before Ovsanna can even be picked up for the night she’s attacked in her front yard by a horrible werebeast. The beast takes off when it hears sirens and Ovsanna is A-ok. Keeping this information to herself she heads off and has a wonderful time with Peter. It seems like the beginning of…something, though neither of them are sure what exactly. Peter isn’t thrilled though when he eventually finds out about the attack and wants to protect her.

But there are other happenings going on in Hollywood. First there is Ovsanna’s assistant/lover/house mate who brings a drug dealer back from her family visit in Louisiana in order to keep him away from her brother. Next is Maral’s attempts at hoodoo and spells. Then there are the Vampyres of Hollywood – among others, Orson Wells, Mary Pickford and Pola Negri, who want to take over as Ovsanna’s business partner. Then there’s the boxenwolves – humans who use magic to change into wolves – who are attacking Ovsanna and Peter. Ovsanna and Peter now need to find out exactly what’s after Ovsanna and why. Unfortunately they each take their lives into their hands when they figure it out.

This was a great second book in the Vampyres of Hollywood series. I thought the book had just the right mixture of Hollywood and paranormal, along with romance and grit to give it a truly engaging story. And there was the humor that we saw in book 1 as well and had me laughing out loud in several parts of the book.

We got to see a bit more into the lives of the main characters, Ovsanna and Peter, but the story with the wolves really took precedence. Love Bites certainly wasn’t as gory as the first book, Vampyres of Hollywood, but beware, it did have it’s blood-soaked moments.

Overall a very good book that kept my attention from beginning to end.
