Dominic of the Dragonseeker lineage, one of the most powerful lines the Carpathian people has, ingests vampire blood laces with parasites in order to be able to go the very heart of the enemy camp and learn their plans. It is a one way mission. He knows he has little time once the parasites and the blood go to work. He plans to get in fast, relay the information to the leader of the Carpathians living in the area and go out fighting -- an honorable way to end his life.

Solange Sangria is one of the last of the jaguar people, a royal pureblood. Her people, once many are now nearly extinct, a dying species that cannot recover from the choices they made over hundreds of years. She has long been alone, fighting to save the remaining women who are able to shift, from the hands of Brodrick the Terrible, her own father who slaughtered her family and everyone she loved. Wounded, weary, she plans one last battle, hoping to stop the man who has made an alliance with the vampires, accepting she will not come out alive.

They are two warriors who have lived their lives alone. Now, at the end of their time, they find each other, a complication, neither saw coming.

I have a theory. CF has already brought the Carpathian and Jaguar people together. She began to close some major plots of her Carpathian series a couple of years ago. In Dark Peril, it was mentioned that the jaguar-men kidnap psychic women (ala GhostWalker series). All she has to do is someone integrate the Drake series. If she does that, I think that she’ll write a few more books and then retire. It’s just suspicious to me that she would write back to back books that have tell the story of three characters that her readers REALLY want (Solange, Dominic, and Razvan).

Onto the review. Dark Peril was everything I expected and nothing I expected. Dominic was exactly what I expected. Solange was what I expected, but only to a point. After the horror that she witnessed when she was a child, Solange had to grow up. Fast. Solange has had a heartbreaking life; one that will make you ache for her. It made her into the woman she is. She is a strong, independent woman. To care about someone is to make yourself vulnerable, something that Solange will not do. Then she meets Dominic. He doesn’t just want her to care, he demands it.

Dominic is the quintessential Carpathian male. Arrogant and old skool. Except he’s Dragonseeker too. That means that he can ingest vampire blood and study the compounds of the blood. He can appear to be a vampire when he is still Carpathian. What does this mean, you ask? Why, he can go in undercover! The he meets Solange and all his plans go to hell. He has these vampire parasites in him. He was planning on taking out a large faction of vampires and then meeting the dawn and waiting to meet his mate in the next life. Now he has found Solange.

Dominic is someone that Solange thought was only part of her dreams. In her dreams, she’s the man that is everything she would ever want–if she were normal. She’s told her dream man everything. No one knows more about her than him. When she finds out that he’s real, she’s horrified beyond belief. Solange knows what Carpathian men are like when they find their lifemates and she knows that Dominic is not going to let her go. Yet somehow he convinces her that he’s different. I didn’t get that one. For someone that is supposed to be so smart, Solange played her stupid card on that one.

Dominic is surprisingly accepting of Solange’s warrior tendencies. She’s a fighter and he has no intention of trying to change that. What he does plan on doing is demanding that she let her guard down when they are alone. Only when they are alone. Dominic likes that only he knows the real Solange.

This is one of the better books of the series. I think that it got to be so much fluff and sex that Feehan had to do something to get it going again. She has certainly done that. For years I haven’t really been looking forward to the next book. I’ve been ambivalent as far as the Carpathians go. Now I’m curious to see where she takes it.

4.5 out of 5.

I have yet to read a book by Christine Feehan, but she’s on my wishlist and this book looks amazing 🙂

  2. Don’t enter me in the contest as I already read this one but . . .

Totally agree with this review. I expected Solange to fight more, I mean even her most passive heroines fought the ‘imprinting’ – sorry no other way for me to describe it – LOL more than Solange did!

sorry, I haven’t read your review – maybe there are spoilers for me 😉 I’m up to Dark Slayer, which is currently on the way to me and I can’t wait to read on! I love Christine Feehans Carpathians and her other series too… she is one of my auto-buy authors and all her books are keepers for me…
    greetings, Ina

  4. Great review! The Carpathians is still one series I really long. Only bad thing is it’s only one book a year. I’m looking forward to reading this one.

  6. Great review! I’ve been waffling about this series for some time. Maybe it’s time I bump it up higher on my list. Thank you.

  7. Please enter me, I’d so love to win this. I’m a huge fan like everyone else here 😀 6ish yrs ago I picked up 1 of her bks @ walgreens not knowing anything about her,the series or paranormal romance. I finished her bk in 1 night & the next day I bought everything I could get my hands on. I hate to admit this but I never went back to reading true crime books again. I’m sorry, please don’t bash me too bad. It kills me,the publisher releasing her in hard covers because I have to wait 2yrs to buy & read her carpathian bks now. I just can’t swing hard cover cash.
