Main Characters: Toby, Sara
Series: None

Reminiscent of the movie Say Anything, a debut novel for all those searching for The One!

Sara and Tobey couldn’t be more different. She is focused on getting into her first-choice college; he wants to win Battle of the Bands. Sara’s other goal is to find true love, so when Dave, a popular jock, asks her out, she’s thrilled. But then there’s Tobey. His amazing blue eyes and quirky wit always creep into her thoughts. It just so happens that one of Tobey’s goals is also to make Sara fall in love with him. Told in alternating points of view, Sara and Tobey’s real connection will have everyone rooting for them from the minute they meet!

This book is told in first person between the main female lead and the main male lead. I thought it was such a cute book after I got over the confusion of the first couple of chapters. This book sort of just jumps into the action and it took me a while to get a feel of who was talking and what was going on.

So we’ve got Sara, who’s starting senior year and her goal for the year is to land a boyfriend. When she starts crushing on the most perfect boy at school, David and he asks her out, she’s over the moon but after a few weeks of dating him, she finds out that he’s not exactly the dream boat that she thought he was.

A lot of that has to do with the fact that she’s starting to notice another boy, Tobey in her music class and with each passing day, she gets more intrigued and curious about Tobey. Their story evolves over the course of this book and I thought it was too cute.

This book took me back to high school. It made me remember all of the silly things that I did to get the attention of the boy that I liked. Oh goodness, from the most embarrassing like passing notes with your friends in class, obsessing over your crush to finding out your crush’s entire class schedule and then planting yourself anywhere near any of his classes, in hopes that you’d run into him and get a chance to talk to him. Dazzle him and all that.

This book had all of that and I thought it was just down right adorable. I adored both Sara and Tobey. I thought they were such a cute couple and they acted like normal teenagers do. Sara took too long to break up with David but when she finally did, she wasted no time at all in hopping into Tobey’s arms and I was A-okay with that.

I enjoyed getting to know both Sara and Tobey. I really liked that we got to see their story come together through both of their POV’s. In a lot of YA books, they’re written in first person from one main character’s POV and I’m sometimes left wanting to know more about the other characters in this book but it wasn’t like that in this book. I got to know both Tobey and Sara and it was great.

This book was an overall good read. It did its job of entertaining me and while I was reading it, I was anxious to read more so that’s good. But even though it was an entertaining read, there were still things that I wish I got from the story. Like I wish Tobey and his friends had dealt with David and his dumb friends for the prank they pulled at the Battle of the Bands. I wish that issue had been dealt with and because I’m a bloodthirsty wench, it would have been nice if David would have been dealt with as well. It would have been nice to see him get his or something but whatever, alls well that ends well.

This book was a great read and I enjoyed it. I’d recommend this book, definitely.

  1. I’m glad you liked this one. I just started Something Like Fate this morning. It’s written in first person POV as well, but not far enough into it to see if it’s told from a guy’s pov.

Also, I have this book in my tbr pile. LOL

  2. Ooh, I’m jealous…I can’t wait to read your thoughts on it! Man, email me when you’re finished. I don’t think I can wait that long to hear what you thought since I want this book like its nobody’s business!

  3. I’m interested to read her Something Like Fate as well. Though the story sounds soooo similar to Elizabeth Scott’s The Unwritten Rule, which I LOVED. Wonder how it compares…you’ll have to let us know what you think Ames!

Hmm not sure about this one though. I’ve picked it up several times from the library but never got around to it. Might just skip it though….

  4. Thanks Sara! The dual POV helped me to get into what the young hero was thinking instead of just the young heroine and I loved that!

    Mollie,

I love this storyline so I’m so on board for reading The Unwritten Rule as well.

  5. I love Say Anything! Somehow if it’s on TV I always get sucked into watching it for the millioneth time. So this ones going on top of the already high TBR list.

Since I haven’t read Colasanti before, which one of hers is your favorite?

  6. You know, I’ve never even seen that movie but I’m thinking maybe I should. I just barely saw Princess Bride for the first time.

This is the first Colasanti book that I’ve read so I couldn’t answer that sorry sweets! This one wasn’t too bad.
