Tracy’s review of Hell Fire (Corine Solomon #2) by Ann Aguirre

As a handler, Corine Solomon can touch any object and know its history. It’s too bad she can’t seem to forget her own. With her ex-boyfriend Chance in tow-lending his own supernatural brand of luck-Corine journeys back home to Kilmer, Georgia, in order to discover the truth behind her mother’s death and the origins of her “gift”.

But while trying to uncover the secrets in her past, Corine and Chance find that something is rotten in the state of Georgia. Inside Kilmer’s borders there are signs of a dark curse affecting the town and all its residents-and it can only be satisfied with death…

Corine and Chance are in Kilmer, Georgia, the town that Corine and her mother lived in once upon a time. But Corine’s mother died when Corine was 6 and she is determined to find out who killed her. When Corine and Chance enter Kilmer though, they get some weird feelings – dark evil feelings. The townspeople are, putting it lightly, odd and pretty uncommunicative about Corine’s past. The two decide to start knocking on the doors of Corine’s foster parents to see if they can glean any information from them but that turns out to be a bust.

When some incredibly strange events start happening – like someone is trying to kill Corine – Jesse Saldana, cop from Texas and also an empath, feels Corine’s distress and comes running to Georgia to help out. With the help of a young “gifted” girl from Kilmer, Shannon, the group tries to piece together what’s been happening to Kilmer for the past 10 years. From the demon that inhabits the woods to the multiple, unexplainable deaths that have plagued the town to the astral-type cloud that is hanging over Kilmer the strangeness just keeps getting worse and worse.

This is book 2 in the Corine Solomon series and it’s a good one. I loved Corine and her friends and how they all worked together – each using their “gift” to discover exactly what’s going on in the town and why they are out to kill Corine. I think what I liked most about this book was that team effort that was involved with solving the mystery that was Kilmer. Jesse, Chance, Corine and Shannon all worked together and used their various abilities to discern different things. But on top of that it’s the normalness of the group, despite their abilities that I loved as well. It’s an emotionally charged time for Corine but her friends are there to step in and help.

Now while all of this mystery and mayhem was happening there was also the issue of the relationship between Chance and Corine. Chance is trying very hard to be what Corine wants – an open and giving person who is willing to let her make her own decisions – but it’s extremely hard for him. He’s willing to do what needs to be done though. But in the end, is that what Corine wants or needs? Will she ever know all of Chance’s secrets and is he really willing to let go of everything? Corine’s not so sure he will and has to make some very hard decisions during this book.

Overall Hell Fire is an extremely well written story that got my attention and wouldn’t let go. Yes, it has mystery, drama, demons and evil, but it also has love, acceptance, understanding and humor which made the book, for me, a wonderful read. I can’t wait to read what happens next with Corine and the rest of the crew.
