Kris‘ review of Flirt (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, Book 18) by Laurell K. Hamilton

When Anita Blake meets with prospective client Tony Bennington, who is desperate to have her reanimate his recently deceased wife, she is full of sympathy for his loss. Anita knows something about love, and she knows everything there is to know about loss.

But what she also knows, though Tony Bennington seems unwilling to be convinced, is that the thing she can do as a necromancer isn’t the miracle he thinks he needs. The creature that Anita could coerce to step out of the late Mrs. Bennington’s grave would not be the lovely Mrs. Bennington. Not really. And not for long.

This book for me felt similar to Micah in that I feel it makes a great short story but would not buy it in hardback. There was no real bad guy in this installment. It furthers the storyline, yes, but there is no real strong antagonist like in most of the books. Anita is kidnapped by a group of lion mercenaries who have been hired to force Anita to do a zombie raising that she has previously refused to do.

They show her pictures of her men who currently have snipers following them and will shoot them if she does not cooperate. She does find her lion to call in this story, but there is not much interaction between her and the other guys in this story. And I mean talking 🙂 There is actually only one sex scene in the book. Of course it is also a short book. All in all I thought it was a good story but I would not pay hardback prices for it. I would get a library copy and wait for paperback.

I give it a 3.5 out of 5.
