Edward, Marquess of Foye, would have been happy to continue his life as an unmarried gentleman rake. His brother’s death changed everything. As the last of his line, Edward must now marry. Heart already broken by a capricious young girl, he vows to find an older woman-seasoned, mature. . .and no threat to his feelings. Falling in love can be dangerous. . .

Sabine Godard was educated by an Oxford don beyond what was proper. Her studies became her salvation after her past left her unwilling to accept the touch of any man. Though she never intended to fall in love, when she and Edward meet, passion defies logic. Together they explore temptation and sensuality, healing old wounds. . .until events require them to risk everything for their love.

The Marquess of Foye doesn’t want to get married. He’s thinking he might sometime, but it certainly won’t be for love and it definitely will be to an older woman that has experience. When Foye walks into a parlor in Turkey and sees Sabine Godard he cannot take his eyes from her. Even though she is quite a bit younger than he is (which he has issues with eventually) he is fascinated by her demeanor, her facial expressions, her personality – all of it. Foye is determined to let her know that he was present in England the night, eighteen months earlier, that her reputation was completely trashed. I never quite understood his determination to tell Sabine this info. I know he wanted her to know that he didn’t agree with what was said, but besides that, why?

Sabine Godard cannot take her eyes from the Marquess of Foye. His features are brutish and strangely put together – and he’s a hulk of a man at 6’5″ – but there’s something about him that gets to her. When Foye tells her of his knowledge of her reputation she becomes standoffish and just knows that he is only talking to her because he thinks she is a loose woman. She’s not loose and she will be her uncle’s companion until the day he dies – she will, according to her, never marry.

As Sabine and Foye get to know each other more they realize that they have something special. I don’t want to call it love at first sight because it did grow somewhat but it did happen very fast. Normally this would have been a problem for me but it happened so early in the book I found myself wanting to read more so that I could see where things went.

Sabine and her uncle decide to travel more and are going to visit a pasha’s home. Foye tries to talk Sabine out of it as he’s aware that the pasha has unseemly thoughts toward Sabine. They end up going and things don’t go well at all.

Eventually (yes, I’m leaving things out so as not to ruin it all for you) Sabine and Foye are traveling together while Sabine is in disguise. It was during this time that their relationship grew. They figured out things about the other that they didn’t know before and it made them love the other even more. I was so happy to see this development as they had fallen in love so quickly. I think what I liked so much about it was that they each had their doubts about the other and I thought that it was very realistic since they had fallen in love so quickly and not really known the other person that well.

The ending of the book was a tad more melodramatic than I usually care for but it seemed to work with the overall thing climax of the story.
