Casee‘s review of Pack Challenge (Magnus Pack, Book 1) by Shelly Laurenston.

What’s an Alpha Male to do when he meets the Alpha Female of his dreams? Step one, hide all sharp objects. All Zach Sheridan ever wanted was to become Alpha Male of his Pack and be left alone. What he definitely didn’t need in his life was some needy female demanding his attention. What he never saw coming was the vicious, scarred female who not only demanded his attention but knew exactly how to get it. Sara Morrighan knew this was the best she could expect from her life. Good friends. A nice place to live. And a safe job. But when Zach rode into her small Texas town with his motorcycle club, Sara knew she wanted more. She knew she wanted him. But after one sexy encounter with her dream biker, everything is starting to change. Her body. Her strength. That new thing she’s doing with the snarling. Even her best friends are starting to wonder what’s going on with her. But this is only the beginning. Sara’s about to find out her life was meant for so much more. And Zach’s about to find true love with the one woman who makes him absolutely insane.

I started this series after Tracy recommended it to me. I always like finding shapeshifter books, especially written by new authors, so I was very eager to read this.

Zach Sherridan never wanted to take a mate. He saw what mating could do to a wolf and he wanted nothing to do with it. Then his pack goes to Texas to “retrieve” Sara Morrighan. Sara is one of their kind, but she doesn’t know it. Until the recent death of her grandmother, no one dared to go near her. Now Zach’s pack wants her safe. The instant attraction Zach feels for Sara is as unexpected as it is unwelcome.

Sara was satisfied, if not happy with her life. Years before when a wild animal killed her father, scarring her, the course of her life changed. Going to live with her grandmother was a hell she wouldn’t wish on anyone. Sara had her friends, Miki and Angelina to get her through those hellish years. When she first sees Zach Sheridan, he brings something alive inside her that she’s always known was there, but never acknowledged.

Now Zach has to figure out a way to bring Sara into their pack without freaking her out. She has no idea that the people that have looked out for her all her life are Shifters. He doesn’t expect it to be easy, but he doesn’t expect it to be too difficult either. That changes when he starts getting to know her.

I liked the premise of this book. I even liked the “romance”. Even Sara’s viciousness didn’t turn me off at first. At first. Eventually it did. I understand that as the Alpha Female of the pack, Sara had to be stronger than any of the other females (as females are more vicious than males). So I got that. It was the relationship between Zach and Sara that I didn’t really care for. What they have between them can’t be explained as love. It’s darker than love. More like possession.

It wasn’t enough to stop me from reading the rest of the books in the series.

3.75 out of 5.

  1. This book just makes me laugh. I think what I love most about it is the humor, the family aspect of Sara and her friends and of course Sara and Zach. I thought it was a nice change to have two alpha’s who you knew weren’t romantic people come together. I guess for me it made it more realistic. Glad you read it though. 🙂
