Rowena‘s review of Lucky in Love by Carolyn Brown.

Hero: Beau Luckadeau
Heroine: Milli Torres
Grade: 3.5 out of 5

When hunky rancher “Lucky Beau” Luckadeau accuses spitfire Milli Torres of stealing his prize bull, she promptly shoots at him, triggering a feud that only gets resolved when they discover they share a steamy hot memory from a night long ago…

It was a night of passion that has always haunted Lucky. The mysterious beauty he seduced at a cousin’s wedding disappeared. He’s always been lucky at cards, lucky
with cattle, and lucky with land, but he’s never been lucky in love.

Now Milli Torres has come to southern Oklahoma to help out on her grandfather’s ranch. A cut fence and a big, mean Angus bull in the pasture are bad enough, but then she looks up and sees Beau Luckadeau. Great God Almighty, how did he get from Louisiana to Ardmore, Oklahoma, and what in the hell is she going to do if he recognizes her?

I haven’t read a western in quite some time and I figured I was up for one since this book piqued my interest. I’m glad that I read this book because it ended up being a delightfully quick read. Carolyn Brown is a new to me author and after reading this book, I’m curious to read more of her stuff.

This book is about Milli Torres and Beau Luckadeau. They met at a wedding two years before. He was drunk, she was pissed and a one night stand ensued. The morning after, she hightails it out of there and runs home. Nine months later she has a beautiful little girl and doesn’t think she’d ever see that gorgeous drunken mess of a man again, so she moves on with her life. Until her grandfather gets sick and she has to go out there to help him run his ranch while he’s out on disability. She packs her little bundle of joy up and makes the trip to her grandparents home and is in for the surprise of her life because her baby daddy lives on the ranch next door to her grandparents.

Whoa dang.

To make matters worse, Beau doesn’t know who she is though she does look mighty familiar to him. She knows exactly who he is and she knows exactly what he is to her daughter but does she come clean with any of this? Nope. She waits and waits and waits until he finds out for himself and then the shit hits the fan and everything is turned upside down. That is what made me so hot dang mad about Milli. She knew all of this from the very beginning but she doesn’t say a blessed thing to anyone and because Katy (the daughter) is a spitting image of her father, everyone starts figuring things out for themselves.

Beau was a great hero. One of the very best kinds of men out there. He’s a cowboy that wears eel boots and runs a ranch and is tall, sexy, and handsome. He’s everything a woman could want in a man and yet Milli did him dirty. Did him dirty in the sense that even as she knew that he was a good man and loved his daughter and wanted to start getting to know his daughter, she did the one thing that should have been unforgivable but was forgiven before her apology was cold. I wanted Beau to give her hell for what she did but because he loved her so much, he forgave her. Immediately. I didn’t think I was so bloodthirsty but I wanted him to make her pay for doing what she did.

Milli was one of those heroines that was too smart for her own good. She was bloody perfect at everything but did stupid things. I enjoyed getting to know her but she reminded me of that one friend you have in your circle of friends who you love but does such stupid things that you can’t understand. The way that thought, the way that she handled the whole Beau thing just annoyed the snot out of me and I couldn’t for the life of me understand where she was coming from. She could have handled everything so much better than she did but at the end of the book, I still liked her. So that’s saying something.

This book as a whole was a really quick but good read. It was easy to fall into the story and easy to root for Beau to finally be lucky in love at the end. The ending was a bit rushed but overall, I still enjoyed the book. I enjoyed it and am mighty curious to see what else Carolyn Brown has up her sleeve. I will definitely be checking out more from this series.
