Review: Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs

It’s now been 2 months since Charles and Anna were married. Anna is still having intimacy issues but she’s learning to get by them little by little.

Charles father, Bran, the Marrok of the US werewolf packs has decided to send Charles to Seattle to talk to the European packs about how he will soon reveal the existence of werewolves to the world. Whether the European packs like it or not they have no control over Bran so they’re having to deal with it. It’s Charles’ job to try to work out compromises, possible loans and maybe even immigration issues with the packs from across the sea. The talks are being mediated by a local fae, Dana.

When Charles is in talks Anna is off shopping with the Seattle packs second, Tom, and his wife, Moira. While out and about they are attacked by vampires. So begins a series of events that will test Anna and Charles relationship as well as their strength.

Yet again Patricia Briggs has brought us an incredible story. This book was no less wonderful, in my opinion, than Cry Wolf. New players were brought in but never did it take away from Charles and Anna – and the book is ultimately about them.

Anna in this book is put to several tests. She’s facing beings she only just learned even existed, she’s meeting another Omega and learning to deal with Alpha’s in an original way. She’s learning not to be so afraid – of life and of love. She’s got this amazing inner strength. She just thinks she’s a coward, but when truly put to the test she always comes out on this side of powerful.

Charles is once again one of my favorite characters. He’s so patient with Anna even though he wants to attack. He loves her so darned much and it shows in so many different ways. He’s never been a talker, but when Anna starts to discuss matters in their relationship he always opens up to her. I just love him! lol

If you liked A & O and Cry Wolf I think you’ll like Hunting Ground as well. Good addition to the series.

  1. I really enjoyed HG. Loved to see Anna grow and become more confident..and I love Charles:)

Wish Bran had been in it a bit more..I think he needs his own series;)

  2. Mandi – me too! It was so good to see Anna coming out of her shell. Although we didn't know her before her change she sounded like she was a strong confident woman.
Yeah, I'm liking Bran too. Maybe he'll get his own book one day…like Acheron. 🙂

KB – yes you do! Snuggle time with Charles. I want that! lol

CJ – I've only read this series but have to agree with you. I need to whittle down my TBR and then maybe I'll get the Mercy Thompson series from the library. (why do I hear you laughing when I say I'm going to whittle down my TBR???)

  3. I loved this book, too! Anna and Charles are such fantastic, storng characters …. as individuals and as a couple. I was still hoping for more for them in this book, but the pacing of their relationship is actually most realistic the way Briggs presents it. I loved learning more about how Omega's work.

Tracy, forget the freakin' size of your TBR… you MUST read the Mercy Thompson books. I love them even more than the Alpha & Omega books… I think you will too. 😉

  4. Yay, you enjoyed it, Tracy!! 🙂 I thought Hunting Ground was a great book 🙂 Love Anna and Charles and I hope we get to see Moira and Tom soon again 😀

By the way, I think you meant 6 weeks, not 6 months they were married.

  5. I want!! I loved "Alpha and Omega" and liked "Cry Wolf." thanks for the review. One of these days I intent to read Briggs' fantasy back list. Have you tried any of them?

  6. LOL Christine – I know, I know, I really need to read them. It's just so hard to think about when I have so many books already. Soon, I swear. 🙂

Nath – you are totally correct – it was 6weeks. I think I meant 2 months originally. Thanks for catching that for me.
I really liked Moira and Tom as well. That would be cool if they had a cameo in another book.

Ciara – nope. The only books I've read of hers are the A & O books.

  7. Oh, I can't wait to read this book! Anna has to be my favourite UF character. She's a strong character, but strong on the inside, and I just adore that 🙂

And I really liked hearing that Patricia Briggs is working through the intimacy issues in a realistic manner. This is probably TMI, but I can really relate to a character that isn't at ease with sex and intimacy. It makes me feel less like a…abnormality 🙂

    As for Bran *SIGH*

I might have to buy this book as I'm 30th in the library hold list 🙁

  8. I cannot wait to read this one. It's not out down here in NZ as yet. Might have another look on the weekend and double check though. Want to read it now!!

  9. I just posted at Nath's that I'm going to go back to the beginning and start with the anth, CRY WOLF and then HUNTING GROUND which I already purchased. I read the first two right after a Mercy glom and maybe I just couldn't change gears or something, because as much as I loved those Mercy books the Alpha/Omega books just paled in comparison.

  10. Orannia – it really was a great 2nd novel. I'm not normally one who goes in for the continuing relationships and like to have my HEA's at the end of each book. These books, however, have gotten my attention and I'm loving reading about Anna and Charles.

Sarah – I hope you found it! When I can't find it in the stores that when I usually head to an online store like Books on Board and download it! lol I'm so impatient!

Rosie – You'll have to let me know what you think the second time around.
