Casee‘s review of Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard.

…the deliciously racy topic that Jaine Bright and her three girlfriends are pondering one night at their favorite after-hours hot spot: Mr. Perfect. Would he be tall, dark, and handsome? Caring and warmhearted — or will just muscular do? As their conversation hears up, they concoct a tongue-in-cheek checklist that becomes an overnight sensation, spreading like wildfire at work and sizzling along e-mail lines. But what began as a joke among friends turns deadly serious when one of the four women is murdered….Turning to her neighbor, an unpredictable police detective, for help, Jaine must unmask a killer to save her friends — and herself. Now, knowing whom to trust and whom to love is a matter of survival — as the dream of Mr. Perfect becomes a chilling nightmare.

This book is a fan favorite, which something that I have never really understood. Not that I don’t think this is a good book; I do. I just don’t think it deserves the type of praise I have seen it get.

In typical Linda Howard fashion, when the h/h get together…fireworks.

Janie is very proud of her new house. She likes her job and has a great group of friends, who go out with each other each Friday. The only thing she doesn’t like is her surly neighbor. He comes home at all hours of the night and yells at her for mowing her lawn at 9am on a Saturday morning. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Janie looked out her kitchen window and saw Sam naked. Ha.

On a Friday night, Janie and her three friends decided to make a list of qualities that their “Mr. Perfect” would have. What started out as something funny, turned into something big. The list was published in the local paper and it was very obvious who the four women were. It messes with all four of their lives, in very different ways.

Then some psycho decides that the four of them should die. Madness and mayhem ensue.

The book was funny (paying for swearing) and sad (death). So even though this isn’t a favorite of mine, it’s still better than the last four or five books that LH has out.

4 out of 5.

This book is available from Pocket. You can buy it here.

  1. I liked the book too and also didn’t get the the uproar over it, although I thought it was a good read. People never believe me when I tell them I figured out who the villian was pretty quickly.

  2. I have to admit it is one of my all time favs. There is just something about Sam that I simply love.

I think LH’s “older” novels are noteably better than her recent releases. She is an author who has slipped from auto-buy status to must read when I get the chance. There are a few newer books that I still haven’t read, but I have done rereads of Mr. Perfect, Open Season, and After the Night.

I love this book and it’s one of my favorite re-reads. It’s Sam and mainly his interactions with Janie that catch my interest.

  4. For me Linda Howard is da bomb!! I loved this one and have read it many a time. I LOVE the arguing back and forth between Sam and Janie! And the window scene – gotta love the window scene 😉
