Wanna Get Away?

Remember all of those hilariously funny Southwest Airlines commercials where someone is completely embarrassed and you hear them say, “Wanna get away?” There have been times aplenty when I’ve cringed at what is going to happen to a character or what is happening to a character in one of the many romance novels that I’ve read and this post here is where we’re going to talk about them.

Remember in This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips when Molly tries to seduce Kevin in his sleep? Do you remember reading that scene at the beginning of the book with your heart pounding in your throat because you couldn’t believe she was actually considering doing what she was going to do and then when the shit hits the fan, you’re yelling in your head about how stupid, stupid, stupid she was and you were just so effing embarrassed for her that you wanted to drown in your own puddle of embarrassment?

I mean, seriously…who does crap like that?

What about the time in Can You Keep a Secret by Sophia Kinsella when Jack put Emma on blast on NATIONAL TELEVISION? Each and every secret that Emma had was spread out for everyone to know and as I was reading that scene (actually, every time I read that scene) I get red in the face and so embarrassed for Emma because that seriously bites. To walk around and know that everyone that watched that program was a witness to your greatest embarrassment is just too embarrassing for words.

Now, I could go on and on for days about how embarrassed I was for this character and that character but I thought it would be a fun little discussion for Book Binge. So let’s hear them, what scenes from books you’ve read made you want to duck for cover in embarrassment for the characters? Don’t be shy…let’s compare notes!

  1. The Corset Diaries by Katie MacAlister…The heroine bends over in her way too tight dress and passes gas in front of the extremely HOT hero! I laughed so hard and wanted to hide my face for her.

    Samantha,

Oh no! That sounds all kinds of embarrassing and in front of the hero?

    Goodness. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I cannot think of a book scene off hand, the first thing that comes to mind is the movie Never Been Kissed. Pretty much the whole movie is Wanna get Away scenes.
I love and hate that movie because I hate to watch someone get humiliated. I hate to have that happen to me so I do not want it to happen to others.

  4. Ok, this is from the book called, FIFTEEN MINUTES OF SHAME, by Lisa Daily, when the leading lady of the story named Darby, is conducting a coveted interview with Matt Lauer on The Today Show, finds out in front of the whole world, that her husband has cheated on her. When Matt divulges information from an article appearing in the morning’s newspaper, she reacts by exuding a spectacular stream of vomit in his chrysanthemums and passing out.

I was so appalled by her husband’s lack of consideration and her unfortunate turn of events on national television.

It is an exceptional story how she gets back at her ex-husband.

I’m remembering the moment in Practice Makes Perfect when Payton’s heel breaks off in court and then her skirt splits, showing off her thong and pretty much everything else in open court. Definitely a “Wanna Get Away?” moment. But of course, she handles it perfectly, earning everyone’s respect and admiration.

    Lori,

I totally remember that scene…how could I forget? haha, I was so embarrassed for Peyton even though she got herself out of that scene with a smoothness that made me jealous but still, pretty embarrassing.

    Kris,

Didn’t they call her Grossy Josie? Yeah, I remember that movie. it’s been a long while since I’ve watched it but I loved how she got the guy in the end and I love how he made her feel special. That movie was my favorite movie for a long time. Awww, now I want to watch it again.

    Michele,

Wow, that is pretty embarrassing. I’m adding it to my list of books that I hope to get to before I die. Thanks for the comment!
