What I’ve Been Reading This Week

Posted May 4, 2009 by Tracy in Features | 22 Comments

Greetings and Salutations! How the heck are ya? Doing well I hope. Did you have a good week? Did you have a good weekend? I certainly hope so.

Good week here at the Tracy Household. My youngest took a trial class of Taekwondo (which she’s been bugging me to do forevah!) and she did really well. She definitely wants to start doing that weekly which is very cool. She’s a strong little girl and loves that yell they do when they’re kicking and such..Hu! Hu! or something to that effect. I have to tell you that that night, after her class she was dead asleep and she started yelling in her sleep…Hu! Hu! Omg I thought my hubby and I were going to die we were laughing so hard! Up until then I’d only seen her do dance moves in her sleep so there ya go.

Yesterday there was an impromptu So Cal Blogger meet up. Wendy emailed and let us know about a book signing near her home with Suzanne Enoch. Lori, Renee, Wendy and I were all able to attend and do a little book shopping as well (of course) and then go out for a tasty treat. Ok, my 6 year old and I had dessert – they ate real meals! lol Here we are at the restaurant.

So today was my 44th birthday. Holy shit and wtf is that? lol I could swear I was about 32. Really. When did that happen? Not sure…but it did. It was a good day despite the age. Just hung out at home with the fam watching movies, reading, playing outdoors and going to dinner. Good day. Oh, and it’s also Nath’s b-day today so if you happen to hop by her blog be sure to wish her a happy, happy. (oh and the celebrity? Christopher Cross among others! lol)

Let’s see – there’s still 2 days to get your nominations in for the first Book Sluts ‘r’ us Blogger Award. We know you want it for yourself – really, it’s ok, we know. Go here to see the details.

Also if you missed my last post about sending Hope Tarr’s book around you can go here for info. Hope was nice enough to pop by this morning and give us info on her upcoming books. Very nice.

For those interested I posted my entire April Read List on the far right sidebar for your viewing pleasure. 🙂

I’ll be posting a guest review on Katiebabs’ blog whilst she’s away so you can check that out on Wednesday of this week if you’d like.

So on to what I read this week:

My first read of the week was Pack Challenge by Shelly Laurenston. A fabulous book that I read for Nath’s Re-Read Challenge. Review here.

Next was Paradise Valley by Robyn Carr – book 7 in the Virgin Rivers series. I have to say that there were serious issues being dealt with in this book but for some reason it just didn’t do it for me. There was the relationship between Cameron and Abbey and frankly I just wanted to smack her for most of the book and believe – even at the end of the book – that Cam is just too good for her. Then there was Liz and Rick’s relationship…while dealing with a very tough issue I think it was their ages that turned me off. I couldn’t get past the fact that Liz was 18. She dealt with things very maturely but still. I’m sure it’s just me but that’s how it was. Then Walt and Muriel’s relationship was another aspect of the story and I thought this was probably the sweetest of the book – they’re very cute together. While I didn’t love the book I still love Carr’s writing so I ended up giving this one a 3.5 out of 5.

Next was a novella I read for The Book Binge called Complications by Cat Grant. I’ll let you know when the review is posted.

My Tracy’s TBR Challenge Read for the week was Twist by Colby Hodge (aka Cindy Holby btw). This is a book from the Dorchester Shomi line and it was a surprisingly good read. It was a time travel/paranormal and when the heroine goes forward in time by 100 years the world has changed drastically. There’s been a pandemic that’s descimated 1/2 of the population and those survivors are divided into humans and individuals the humans call Ticks that are alien vampire beings. Without a full review I can’t get too into it but between saving the world and the romance going on between the Abbey and Shane I couldn’t put it down. 4.25 out 5 (The funny thing is…if I remember correctly I won this on The Book Binge last August but had won a different book. When I opened the package I saw this one, I shrugged and put it on the shelf. Now I’m kicking myself cuz it would have been worth it to read it right away!)

My last read for the week was another book for The Book Binge called A Taste of Magic by Tracy Madison. Again, I’ll notify you when the review is posted.

So have you read any of these books?
What did you think of them?

Have a great week and Happy Reading!

  1. So bummed I missed out. I was bringing food to RELAY FOR LIFE for Shmoo’s Fire Explorer group out there walking for the cure! Yeah, I’m a saint. Not!

I’ve got my fingers crossed I can keep up with everything again. Who knows. We do what we can do, ya know?

Love the picture. Lori’s rockin’ it in that top. I missed meeting your baby! Dang it. She’s sure cute.

  2. I reviewed A Taste of Magic back when it first came out. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Enough to check out book 2. 🙂

  3. Happy birthday, my friend!

OMG! Your daughter would have had me rollin too! Devin has doen some silly things in his sleep too. Kids are so entertaining, aren’t they!! And half the time they don’t even realize it.

Another get together! That is so neat!

  4. Looks like a fun time. But…44?! NO WAY! I wish I looked half as good as you do, girl. Anyway, hope you had a wonderful birthday. And I’d love to meet Suzanne Enoch.

  5. OK in that picture are some of my favorite people in bloglandia: Tracy, Wendy, Lori and Renee. Plus your little tiger there. WAH too far away. But hey the good news today is that you’re officially older than me.

    ::primps hair::

Happy Birthday So Cal friend. Miss you. Mwah Mwah Mwah.

    🙂

PS I can’t be a book slut. Ho? Ok sometimes…but lately, no slut. :/

Are you going to read the warden’s latest? I’m going to! I WILL!

  6. Happy belated birthday, Tracy!!! and seriously, no one here believes that you’re 44! LOL 🙂 You sure don’t look it!!

Your daughter is soooo cute! LOL 🙂

The only book in your list that I’ve read is Paradise Valley and I pretty much agree with all what you’ve said.

  7. Happy Belated Birthday, Tracy!!! ^_^

Your little one is super adorable. I love that she was doing Taekwondo in her sleep. So cute.

Great to see the So Cal bloggers spending time together. Wish I was there!

  8. Rosie – we wish you could have been there too but you were doing your motherly and humanitarian duties so you’re very much forgiven. 🙂
Lori WAS rockin that top. 🙂

Anna – you’ll have to let me know how you like book 2 – it does sound cute.

    Amy – Thank you!
Yes, my little one is constantly doing something funny in her sleep. No wonder she’s so tired when she wakes up in the mornings! lol

Stacy – Thank you but stop. More. No, stop. More. lol You’re sweet.
Suzanne Enoch was very nice. My little one even brought her autograph book from Disneyland where she has the characters sign so Suzanne could sign it. Of course then she realized that it was full so she had her sign it right next to Pluto. Suzanne was so very gracious and did it with a smile on her face.

Lb – It was a fun little get together – not too overwhelming.
I’m older than you now? Man! Well, don’t worry honey, you’ll get there eventually and then you can be super cool like me. 🙂
Yes, I have the Warden’s latest but haven’t cracked it open yet. I’ve been checking out people’s ratings (without reading the reviews) and so far it’s averaging a B-. Not bad.

Nath – Happy Birthday to YOU! (once again lol) I’m in fine company. 🙂
Yeah, Paradise Valley was kind of disappointing which was sad.

    Christine – thanks sweetie!
Yep my little martial arts princess was not only yelling but kicking in her sleep – totally into it. lol Her dreams must be extremely vivid!
I wish you were here too! One day you’ll come to visit and we’ll all get together!

  9. Holy crap! I even knew it was your birthday on Sunday and I forgot to say happy birthday! D-oh!! I hope you had a fantastic day.

It was great to see you and everyone 🙂 Daughter #2 is adorable, and she was sooooo good while we sat around and talked books.

  10. Lori – No worries! I’m just happy when my hubby and parents remember. Hubby always has…parents seemed to forget for about 4 years a while back. lol They’re as crazy as I am. 🙂
Thank you! My little one was very good for a while and then she just couldn’t take anymore – but that was after a couple of hours so I was counting my blessings. 🙂

Tam -thanks for the belated wishes! 🙂

  11. Happy Belated B-day, Tracy!

The story about your daughter was so cute. The little stinkers can be so adorably funny sometimes.

  12. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY TRACY!!!

I hope that your day was filled with what you wanted, that you read as much as you desired and that all your wishes came true.

  13. Brie – Aren’t kids so funny. My oldest has such a dry sense of humor so to see the silly things that my youngest does is odd sometimes! 🙂

Brie, Casee and Jenn – thank you so much for the birthday wishes. It was a good day. 🙂

  14. First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

LOL, your daughter sounds too cute! I had signed my six year old up for dance lessons. She went to like two and then just didn’t want to go anymore. She would huff ans puff the whole way. I remember being young and WISHING my mom had put me in dance classes. Kids 😉

I love the picture. You’re all so lucky to live so close. You look like you had a great time.

As for your reads…looks like some good ones. Pack Challenge is on my list of books to read thanks to your review!!

Again, hope you have a happy birthday!

  15. Happy birthday! I’d never have guessed 44. 🙂

Sounds like you had a great weekend and some fabulous reading. Your daughter sounds adorable!

  16. Wendy – I didn’t tell anyone so don’t feel bad at all! lol

Barbara – thanks. She really is doing a great job in Taekwondo. It’s so funny to see this girly girl who wears sparkly flip flops and loves pink to be so focused and disciplined when she’s taking a class. I love it. My oldest actually took a class yesterday but she thinks she’ll take dance instead! lol

Jenb – awww – you’re sweet…lying to the old woman. lol Just kidding! Thank you!!!

    Holly – thanks you!

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.

  17. Happy birthday, Tracy! It was great to see all of you at the signing — I bragged afterward to my family that I got to sign your daughter’s autograph book on the same page as Pluto. That’s pretty high praise. *g*

  18. Suzanne – Thanks for popping by. My little one was just thrilled that she got to meet a “REAL” author. She sees all the books in my office and I think she wonders sometimes who the heck writes them. Since she’s a budding reader it was wonderful for her to get to meet you. And yes – you are on the special page next to Pluto! lol She’s looked at your sig about a thousand times since then. 🙂
