Publisher: Avon, Harper Collins

Centuries ago, this magnificent chalice sealed my fate as a vampire, and now I am its protector. Many have hunted me for it, but only Vivian has accomplished the task. Strong, lovely, haunted . . . I am more attracted to her than I should be, yet her loyalty lies with a man determined to bring about my destruction. But I am not so easily locked in a cage, and now the captive has become the captor.

Though her stormy eyes tempt me, there is too much at stake—not merely my life, but the lives of my vampire Brotherhood. And I am not above using Vivian to achieve my goals, even if it means denying my own heart. The battle to end all battles is just beginning, and I must fight . . . if I could only let my desire be damned.”

I have an extra copy of NIGHT AFTER NIGHT by Kathryn Smith that is up for grabs should anyone want it. To make this a little more interesting, your mission to win this book is to tell me, Rowena, why I am missing out on not reading paranormals. I haven’t been in the mood to read paranormals in a very long time and I kind of miss it (not really) so seriously, tell me why I should be reading paranormals and then I’ll choose a winner from the answers with the most compelling arguments and announce that winner some time next week, sound good?

Alright, let the commenting begin….good luck everyone!

This book is available from Avon. You can buy it here.

  1. That book sounds interesting. :X I’m afraid I’m in the same boat you are, Rowena – I haven’t been reading many paranormals recently either, so maybe the other comments can convince us 😛

However, the appeal is the otherwordly/borderline supernatural. You never know *quite* what to expect from the hero/heroine. Also, for vampires, there’s something appealing about the deeply tormented/angsty hero – and also him loving the heroine *for all of eternity.*
For other creatures; there’s that whole bond/instinctual the hero and heroine are meant to be connection that’s also appealing for a romance.

… Heh. Maybe I have convinced myself, at least.

  2. Maybe you should just focus on the very, very good paranormals? And maybe on the paranormals that feature more than simply vampires? Larissa Ione’s Demonica series, Nalini Singh’s Psi-Changeling series, and Meljean Brook’s Guardian series fulfill both of those.

  3. You should be reading Ann Aguirre’s Blue Diablo for a new flavor of urban fantasy/paranormal. It is not a romance–there is no happily ever after and the romance thread is not the focus of it. But it’s fresh as all get out, with nary a furry shapeshifter or blood slurping dead body in sight.

Seriously excellent–and I can give you a number of excellent reviews (as in WELL written, and also positive reviews) to back my assertion up.

    So, there. Go read it.

I just finished my very first paranormal – The Red-headed Step Sister and I’m hooked!!!
I’d recommend it to get restarted!!

  5. I love this series of Kathryn Smith!
    Count me in! Thanks.

Its so good to just slip out of the now time and go into a creative world with a paranormal read. Each one is so different, so unique. And its often a surprise reading them so I find them for sure creative to read! I hope you do give it a try!! Soon!

Besides this genre, I love reading Jeannie Frosts books. First one was HALFWAY TO THE GRAVE and so fell in love with the hero Bones! I’d love to hear what you end up trying some day!

  6. I’m obsessed with the paranormal—and fantasy in general. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good historical or contemporary too, but paranormal is always going to be my top, my fall back.

One of the things that draws me to para-romances is the fact that you get to meet new and interesting characters— or creatures, if you wish. Whether it’s vampires, werewolves, wizards, demons, gods, or any other magical/mythical creature, they all seem to catch my attention.

It’s probably also because of the slightly darker, more intense themes in the paranormals (usually, of course). It’s not quiet the same as reading about how a small town girl falls for the boy from the city, and besides a few emotional problems along the way, they fall in love and get married. No, instead the para couples have more to deal with, more obstacles to get past, and if they are immortal, well, it gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘happily EVER after’.

If your not a huge fan of the genre, that’s fine, but I think everyone should try to keep a bit of an open mind and try a little of everything. For example, I’m not usually a big contemporary fan, unless it has something else thrown in (such as some sort of good suspense story, or secret military group, or the slightest paranormal touch to it), but that doesn’t mean that I write them all off just because of the genre. BUT, I’m not saying go out and buy every paranormal that comes out, or every one that makes a big hit on the blog-o-sphere, but if you see one that sounds good, give it a try. Really, what is there to lose?

  7. When a friend introduced me to The Dark-Hunter series I became addicted to them. Now I’m always looking for new authors and series in this genre. I like be taken into the different takes and lives on these characters.

  8. 🙂 I picked up a different Kathryn Smith book just this week at the library and am really enjoying it! She’s a new author for me but she’s different and I like her writing style.

YOU are definetly missing out by not reading paranormals!! I admit, some of them are just silly but so many of them are so fabulous. J.R. Ward! Larissa Ione! Sherrilyn Kenyon! Shelly Laurenston! Those four are at the top of their game and are simply fabulous.

It’s fun to just suspend belief for a few minuts and delve into a good paranormal. It’s so far removed from real life that it’s fun to imagine “what if” I know it sounds silly, but I think that’s shy I enjoy them so much!

Please Oh Please! Don’t give up on them yet!!

  9. What your missing from paranormals? Truthfully the sex is raunchy and just plain hot. Where else can you read about vampires having an orgasm while feeding on their mate? Only in paranormals baby. Please count me in!

  10. I get tired of paranormals after awhile too. So what I’ve started doing was going back and forth between genres.

As far as what your missing, well some really good books. Larissa Ione’s Demonica series, Nalini Singh’s Angel’s Blood, Kresley Cole’s IAD, and so many more. I love my paranormals and don’t think I could just stop reading them just need to switch back and forth.

  11. The darkness of the heroes are what draws me to the paranormals. They always seem so tortured and I want to be the woman to heal them LOL

One reason to read paranormals, is Maddox from Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of the best series I’ve ever read!

  12. Rowena. Very simple. You have to read another paranormal romance if for no other reason than to erase that bad taste in your mouth called Breaking Dawn.

I’d love to win a copy of NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. This is the last one in the series …. and the only one I haven’t yet read! I need to know the ending!!!!

  13. I am also on a break from paranormals but I always go back to reading them. They’re just wilder, more extreme, hotter! My favorite is Kresley Cole.

  14. I took a long break from paranormals, most of the last year, but I have gone back to reading them in the last few months. This one looks really good! I think the appeal of paranormal books is that they are pure escapism — there is no need to worry about reality or the world’s problems or anything that might directly impact you — you can truly get “lost” in them.

  15. A good paranormal is the best book you can read to relax. The stories are interesting and you get to meet such amazing characters that you would never meet in real life. They provide a wonderful break from reality that give you time to de-stress.
