Grade: 4 out of 5

What happens when two besties become full-blown worsties? Avalon Greene rules the fashion scene at her sunny So Cal middle school with a diamond-clad fist, calling out classmates for their fashion-do’s and most unfortunate clothes-pas. She’s determined to host the social event of the season- a soiree in honor of her forever-friendship with Halley! Unfortunately, Halley’s new look is one thing Avalon just can’t celebrate…

Halley Brandon is just back from art camp and can’t wait to share her funky new style with her best friend, Avalon. But when Avalon cries fashion foul, Halley realizes her best friend’s true colors may clash with her own. Has their ultra-fabulous friendship finally gone out of style?

From sharing custody of their puppy, Pucci, to drawing up a list of who gets which friends, Avalon and Halley discover what happens when you battle the person who knows everything about you–and isn’t afraid to use your secrets to get what she wants.

This is my second book in the Young Adult Challenge hosted by J.Kaye’s Books. In my quest to read more Young Adult novels (which I really seem to enjoy) I came across this author and thought her blog was fun and hip so I wanted to check her out.

Boy am I glad that I did because this book had me cracking up and reminded me of Gossip Girl…only for middle schoolers. One thing I have to say is that Avalon was a little b word. You see, Avalon and Halley are best friends. They are the fashion police peeps at Seaview Middle School and the summer before their eighth grade year shakes things up in their best friendship. You see, Halley goes away for an Art Program at UC Berkley and befriends the girl that her and Avalon called Softee, Sofee and when Halley gets back, she’s shaken up her style and she’s got a style that Avalon just can’t get behind. Avalon isn’t too happy about Halley’s new friend but Halley feels the same way about Avalon’s new friend. Avalon’s new friend is the head cheerleader, Brianna Cho and Halley is not a fan.

They both decide to throw a Back to School party and even though Halley doesn’t really want to do it, she goes along with it. Before long, you can tell that the new friendships these two formed over the summer wreak havoc in their lives and turn the both of them into snotty little brats to each other but I’ve got to be honest and tell you guys that their little fights and their little snits that they get into with each other are funny. Their pranks had me laughing out loud more than once and I just really enjoyed reading this book. I think it’s totally age appropriate for tweens and my niece Chaylene, who is 11 years old had this to say about the book, “I think that Avalon was a real bad word but the book was funny and I really like Faketastic so far” so I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read a really fast and funny teen book about two frenemies. It’s funny because that one saying, “Who needs enemies when you have friends like her?” is totally talking about these two from this book.

It’s an enjoyable book though. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone.

This book is available from Harper Teen. You can buy it here.
