Kris‘ review of The Quickening by Antonia Tiranth

Sometimes, dragons are a girl’s best friend.
Aer was my best friend in high school. Okay, I had a huge crush on him. Then he disappeared. But, now he’s back and he’s in some kind of trouble. He needs my help. I should say no, just on principle, but he’s too cute to resist.

Did I mention Aer is a dragon?
Having a dragon for a boyfriend might not be a bad thing. Of course, first I have to help him rescue his brother–and save the Rikashi, an entire race of dragon shifters.

This was a nice paranormal read if you don’t mind reading stories in first person. The story starts with Jo talking with her friend about dating. Her friend is trying to set her up and Jo does not want to be set up. Jo is hung up on her best friend from high school whom she has not seen in 5 years. He left after prom night and has not been seen or heard from since. Then he shows up in Jo’s living room 5 years later asking for her help.

He explains how he is a dragon shifter and needs her help to free his brother who is being held by someone who can sense other dragon shifters nearby but cannot sense a human nearby. What’s a girl to do.

There are some interesting twists that follow that make the story interesting and kept me reading. I liked the characters. I probably would have been a little more freaked out than she was when he shifted the first time, but she explained it away because she had been dreaming about dragon shifters for a while. So was not too freaked out. I think she took things a little too in stride for me, but she is not me. She had people chasing after her and was kidnapped and she never got scared just angry. That was probably my biggest issue with this book. Since most everything was from her POV, I did not get to know Aer totally well, but whatI saw of him, I liked. Decent read, i enjoyed it.

By way of the Book Binge grading scale I would give this a:

3.5 out of 5
