Best of 2008: The Series

Posted January 1, 2009 by Casee in Features | 9 Comments

Series in romance is becoming more and more popular. Though we’ve lamented over the lack of single title contemporaries, we still love our series books. These are our some of our favorite series of the year.

Casee’s List:

These are my top five series of 2008:

1. Immortals After Dark (Krelsey Cole)
2. Lords of the Underworld (Gena Showalter)
3. The Dennehy Sisters (Jo Goodman)
4. The Princes Trilogy (Elizabeth Hoyt)
5. The Bullet Catchers (Roxanne St. Claire)
Rowena’s List:

First off, I’d have to agree with Casee and say that she is probably the biggest fan of series between the three of us since me and Holly have been itching for a regular stand alone (and were gifted with some this year, thank goodness!) books but I do love a good series every now and again (and again).

My top 5 favorite series of 2008 are:

1. The Tall, Dark and Deadly series by Suzanne Brockmann.
2. The Lost Dukes of Wyndham by Julia Quinn.
3. The Queen of Babble series by Meg Cabot.
4. The Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
5. The Troubleshooters series by Suzanne Brockmann.

Holly’s List:

I’ve been whining about there being too many series out there for ages. I really wish there were more stand-alones. Of course I say that, but I’d probably whine and complain if I didn’t get a story for each and every character I love. I’m fickle like that.

1. The Hearts of the South series by Linda Winfree
2. The For Me series by Karen Rose
3. The Guys and Daughters series by Karen Templeton(the Vaccaro’s)
4. The Guardians series by Meljean Brook
5. The American Heroes: The Firefighters series by Jill Shalvis

Series I’m keeping my eye on for 2009:

The Domestic Gods series by Robin Kaye

The Hathaways series by Lisa Kleypas
Celta’s Heartmates by Robin D. Owens
Sisterhood Diaries Trilogy by Susan Andersen
Extraordinary Girl series by Gena Showalter

Honorable mentions go to: The Drake Sisters Series by Feehan (only one left to go), The Wedding Veil Wishes series by Lori Wilde and The In Death Series by J.D. Robb

Says the girl who doesn’t like series. 😛

What about the rest of you? What are your favorite series?

  1. While I’m a big fan of stand alone books too – and get tired of too many series, still I do get hooked. Here are some of my faves:
I second CJ’s Lara Adrian Series. And add the I Team series by Pamela Clare, The Hathaway series by Lisa Kleypas. Of COURSE the In Death series.
Also, The Four Soldiers series by Elizabeth Hoyt.
And there’s probably a whole lot more – but I’m fading and I’m fading fast. The brain is the first to go when that happens!

  2. I didn’t read that anthology, and honestly? I’m not at all interested in it. I know a lot of other people say they didn’t care for it either, but they love the rest of the series.

Demon Angel is kind of slow moving, but good. The rest of the series, though? FREAKING AWESOME. I really think you should try out one of the full length novels.

  3. Lorraine

I’ve never read anything by Suzanne Brockmann, but after reading your reviews I’m going to have to pick one up. Two series in the top five is incredible.

I agree on the Dark Hunters, Lara Adrian, and the Lords of the Underworld series…they’re awesome.

  4. I saw a lot of the authors that I have come to love this year listed here…

    The Lord’s of the Underworld
    Immortals after Dark
    The Dark-Hunters
    In Death
The Drake Sisters (Hannah and Jonah my favorite)

    Then there was
the Crazy Series by Tara Janzen, The signs of Seven by Nora,
the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward (even thought Phurry’s book wasn’t great the rest are amazing),
The Royals by Mary Janice Davidson

I have to say that 2008 was a great year for series..

  5. Seneca

Oh, there are series there that I have never heard of.

Holly, did you like the Guardian book that was in the Hot Spell anthology? That is the only story from the series that I read, and it didn’t like it.
The books are popular so I wonder if I am missing on something good.
(Keep in mind that I hated those Colleen Gleason books, and I have seen the two series be compared to each other.) Should I give the Guardian books a go?

  6. Lori

Oooh, oooh, oooh!!! I have to agree with the Princes trilogy. And I loved the last 3 installments of the Bullet Catchers.

And I’m taking a bow for introducing you to Linda Winfree, Holly. Does she not rock? I saw she was on your best books of the year list, too.

I haven’t gotten around to any lists this year. Of course, I don’t even know if I reviewed 12 books this year. Damn slump.

  7. I like stand-alones and series equally well. My two favorite series of 2008 were Gena Showalter’s Lord of the Underworld and Jill Shalvis’s American Heroes: The Firefighters.
