Please Tell Me I’m Wrong…Please?

Ok – I was just at Lori Foster’s website. I hadn’t been there in a while and wanted to see when the next SBC Fighter book was coming out. I was very happy to see that it’s going to be released in February 2009. I’ve enjoyed this series so far. I like the people who just seem down to earth and “normal”. Yes there’s conflict, but it’s nothing too dastardly.

So imagine my surprise when I read the excerpt and it seemed, now please tell me I’m wrong, that the latest book involves…time travel. Now I’m gonna say this in the nicest way possible…What.The.Fuck? We have Fighters. Not inter-galactic fighters. Regular ones that get in a ring and kick ass and oh, they fall in love somewhere along the way. That’s the kind of contemporary I’m looking for when I read this series.

So…here’s the blurb for the next book My Man, Michael

On the verge of a title shot match, fighter Michael “Mallet” Manchester is injured in a car accident. And just as quickly as his career was taking off, it’s over. Then Kaylie Raine appears, offering him a second chance at becoming whole. Even though Mallet thinks it’s the pain medication talking, he accepts her challenge. And on an extraordinary journey with Kaylie, he’ll get a chance to fight again—to save the woman who has saved him.

Does this say time travel to you? Yeah, me neither. Now…go here and read the excerpt and come back and tell me that I’m wrong. Really. I want someone to tell me that I’m wrong. Please?

  1. Frankly, it sounds bizarre. I’m wondering how fans are going to receive this.

I’ve had this happen to me before. I pick up a book that looks, smells and reads like a contemporary – only to get blind-sided by some unexpected woo-woo (heroine turns out to be psychic, hero can talk to dead people, whatever) – and I have to fight the urge to throw the book against the nearest wall.

It annoys because 1) it smacks of false advertising and 2) I am really, really burnt out on paranormals. I tend to be a mood reader, so if I’m in the mood for a contemporary, and it morphs into “something else” midstream – I’m likely to get cranky.

  2. Oh. My. God. SERIOUSLY??!?!??!

I love this series, but what the hell is she thinking? You don’t change the genre of a series mid stream. Way to lose your readers. If that was a dream sequence, fine. Otherwise, I just can’t see myself reading it, and I have kept my copies of the previous SBC releases.

    Damn.

  3. DAMMIT! That’s what I thought. Shit.

Why would she do that? Ruin a perfectly good contemporary series by bringing in the paranormal. You got a great idea for a paranormal, wonderful. Start.Another.Series. Arrrrrggg.
I hate that. This is the first time this has happened to me and I can say, I’m not liking it at all. And I love paranormals.

  4. Well, if it isn’t TT, it sure is universe travel. Yup. Methinks LL Foster is making an appearance in Lori Foster’s writing. She’ll need to keep these two writing personalities separate to keep her fans happy.

  5. Good morning all, I hope you don’t mind me popping in.

I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you, but “My Man, Michael,” is indeed a time travel. Mallet goes into the future.

I understand it’s not for everyone, and I do hate losing readers, but I always write where my muse takes me.

Let me assure you though, there is a HUGE difference from my L.L. voice. Other than moving from present time to future, it reads like my contemporaries, light and sexy, with the same humor and family orientation. And some of the previous guys from the SBC series are in it. 😉

After this book, I’m back to present with a different SBC book, but not for a fighter. It’ll be for Drew Black’s story. He’s the president and part owner of the SBC. Fighters will appear in the book, and a new fighter will be introduced.

I hope you all have lots of happy reading, even if that doesn’t involve my stories. 🙂

    Hugs,

  6. Hi Tracy!

First let me say Happy Anniversary Chicklet!!!!

Next…. I love Lori Foster and I especially love the SBC Fighters. While I think it might be a little WTF, I will read it regardless because I always close one of her books well pleased. If I can torture myself and have bleeding eyes with a certain loved series I can certainly read about a hunky Time traveling SBC fighter ….lol

  7. LF – Hi and thanks for popping by. I understand that you have to go where the muse takes you but I’m sure you understand it’s a little disconcerting for readers to be reading a contemporary series and then be thrown into the land of paranormal. I can say it’s not happened before and I was more than thrown off course – as you can see. That said, I might still read MMM because I do enjoy your writing and I will definitely be back for Drew’s story.

Sam! Hey Chick where the heck have you been? Thanks for the anniversary wishes. We’re going out tonight to celebrate. (You gotta arrange these things when you can get the sitter).
Bleeding eyes? You wouldn’t be talking about the BDB would you? No, you wouldn’t do that on my blog. Would you? Oh wait, you would! lol Good to hear from you!

  8. Hi Shannon,
Yes, Drew gets a story. The real-life Drew Black (who is Dana White – LOL) is a married man, but in my stories, he’s still single. Ought to be fun. 😉

Hey Samantha, I hope I can reward your trust with a story you love. I’ll hear from advance readers soon, and maybe their input will convince more readers to give it a try. But if not, I do understand.

Tracy, I totally understand. No worries at all. For me, it doesn’t read paranormal at all. I used the future as a means to accomodate some fun plot twists. But otherwise, as I said, I think it reads like my contempts.
But believe me, I’ve skipped plenty of books that I thought I wouldn’t enjoy, so I totally get it. We each only have so much reading time, and we don’t want to waste it. 🙂

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope you’re enjoying crisp weather and lots of smiles!

  9. Thanks Sara. I’d forgotten about this blog, but it just made a light go off for me. I THOUGHT the blurb screamed TT, but some readers (especially those on Amazon) say there was no indication.
This blog says there was, so…
    😉

I hope you enjoy it, Sara!
    Hugs,

    Lori

  10. Sara – glad we could pique your interest. 🙂 Enjoy and thanks for popping by.

Lori – After you mentioned Amazon I just had to go read them…although I normally steer clear of Amazon reviews for many different reasons. Any of my friends who have read say that the book is good and worth reading. As much as I’m not a fan of the change in the series I find myself being drawn to the book. What can I say? I love your book. 🙂

  11. Thanks Tracy. It was a sort of belated realization for me that readers wouldn’t want me to switch up in mid series. LOL. It just never occured to me that anyone would care. I honestly think authors and readers view the books in a very different way.

    Hugs!

    Lori
