Some Like It Wicked

Some like it dangerous . . .

Highland beauty Catriona Kincaid cares nothing for propriety—or even her own safety—when she storms the grounds of Newgate Prison. Determined to return to Scotland and restore her clan’s honor, she seeks the help of Sir Simon Wescott, a disgraced nobleman and notorious rogue. She is prepared to offer him both wealth and freedom, but she never dreams the wicked rake will be bold enough to demand a far more sensual prize.

Some like it seductive . . .

Simon is shocked to discover the tomboy he met long ago has blossomed into a headstrong temptress. Although he’s sworn off his dreams of becoming a hero, he can’t resist playing knight errant to Catriona’s damsel in distress. Both adventure and peril await them at her Highland home, where they will risk their lives to vanquish her enemies . . . and risk their hearts to discover a passion beyond their wildest dreams.

I’ve always loved Teresa Medeiros’ historicals. They’ve never failed to make me sigh, make me laugh, or make me cry. That changed with her last few releases when she decided to go the paranormal route. I’m still not sure why she did that; if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. So I was thrilled when I found out that Some Like It Wicked was a plain ‘ol historical.

Catriona Kincaid was sent from Scotland to her uncle’s home in England after the death of her parents. Catriona has made a life for herself in England, but she longs for the day she can return to Scotland as a part of clan Kincaid. There is only one way she’ll be able to get out of her uncle’s house and that is by marrying someone that will help her. Simon Wescott is just the man she’s looking for. If he doesn’t know her true reasons for marrying him, that’s just fine w/ her.

Simon can’t believe his eyes when Catriona shows up at Newgate. Outlining her outrageous proposition, Simon has a hard time reconciling the beautiful woman in front of him with the sixteen year old girl that left an impression on him so long ago. Though he’d like to refuse Catriona, his circumstances are dire enough that he finds himself agreeing to marry her and then deliver her to her brother in Scotland. All for a hefty price, of course.

Simon soon learns that nothing is simple when it comes to his new bride. It doesn’t take long for Simon to figure out that Catriona had her own reasons for asking him to be her husband. Though he hates to let his naive new bride down, Simon makes sure Catriona knows that he’s far from the hero that she and all of England think he is.

I really liked this book. It was a quick and easy read that left a smile on my face when I was done. The banter between Simon and Catriona could be extremely amusing at times. For example, this is right after their wedding. Catriona has agreed to consummate their marriage, but doesn’t want to feel anything so she lays down on the bed and braces herself.

“What in the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?”

Catriona opened her eyes to find Simon leaning over the bed, frowning down at her as if she’d lost the last of her wits.

She blinked up at him. “Preparing to perform my wifely duties.”

“You look more like you’re preparing to be roasted on a spit.” He grabbed her by the upper arm and hauled her to a sitting position. “If I were you, I’d sit up before someone stuffs an apple in your mouth.”

That was just one of many exchanges between Catriona and Simon that made me laugh. And while this book wasn’t my favorite TM, I still give it a:

4 out of 5.

This book is available from Avon. You can buy it here or here in e-format.

I have this in Mt. TBR. I have quite a few of TM, but I’ve never read her. Hopefully life settles down soon and I can catch up on some of her books.

Yup, I liked this one, too. I skipped over a lot of her stuff when she started on the paranormal series, even thought they were historicals. Vamps just aint my thing. I was glad to see her get back to straight historicals.
