Just in time for hockey season

Hockey player Eric Mitchell is a man in demand. First he was traded to save the New York Blades, and now the publicity department has loaned him out to help boost daytime diva Monica Geary’s career. What no one knows is that one of People magazine’s hottest bachelors is also a closet soap opera fan. He’s had his eyes on Monica for years—and can’t wait to get his arms around her.

It’s sad, but I really haven’t liked the last few releases by Deirdre Martin. Maybe Ty Gallagher is just too much hero to measure up to. I didn’t particularly like Eric and I didn’t like Monica, either. Because there was so much I didn’t like about this book, I’m wondering if it’s not just me.

Eric Mitchell thinks he’s God’s gift to women and hockey players. When he’s traded to the Blades, he knows that it’s the best thing that has ever happened to the team. Life is good for Eric. It gets better when he gets a part playing himself on his favorite soap opera. Soap operas are sacred to hockey players. With all the time they spend on the road, they have become very invested in the lives of the characters. So Eric is thrilled to meet Monica Geary, the soap star he’s been infatuated with for years.

For 10 years Monica has told herself that soap operas are just stepping stone to the major acting gigs that she’ll eventually get. In her business, she’s seen almost everything. Including men like Eric Mitchell. There’s nothing that repels her more than a man like Eric. She doesn’t realize that she’s going to know Eric a lot more than she ever wanted to.

To help her image, Monica’s publicist suggests a faux relationship w/ Eric Mitchell who is a celebrity in his own right. Everything is going wonderful until Monica starts getting feelings for Eric. Feelings that he doesn’t take well.

Eric and his brother Jason grew up w/ wonderful parents. They both had a great childhood. There was no reason for Eric to be as commitment shy as he was. I didn’t buy the whole “I want what my parents have” b/c wanting that doesn’t turn you into the ass Eric was.

My favorite parts of the book were when the hockey players would discuss the soap opera and what was happening. Even imagining grown men talking about it would make me giggle. Aside from not liking the characters, there were the funny moments that I’ve come to expect from Martin. I just didn’t care if the characters themselves got their HEA.

3 out of 5.

This book is available from Berkley Sensation. You can buy it here or here in e-format.

  1. I’ve not read any of her books and this review doesn’t make me want to go out and get any. 🙁 Was Ty Gallagher worth the read?

  2. Okay glad to know that it wasn’t just me.

I have taken her off my tbr pile because I haven’t liked any of her books but the first one. I was starting to think that I was the only one that didn’t like her.
