THE SULTRY HEAT…

Only two things can compel journalist Jenna McMillan back to Buenos Aires after terrorists held her captive there just months before: a rare interview with a shadowy billionaire and the memory of the dark and dangerous man who saved her….

HIDES THE DEADLIEST THREATS…

Bad guys, bombs, and bullets are Gabriel Jones’s way of life. But he’ll never forget the brash redhead he rescued not so long ago…or the passionate kiss they shared before he sent her packing….

AND EXPOSES THE DEEPEST DESIRES.

Now, forced together by a bombing at the National Congress, Jenna and Gabe confront the urgent longings that simmer between them. But this surprise meeting is no coincidence. A ruthless enemy stalks them with deadly precision. The question is…if they make it out alive, will Gabe turn his back on Jenna…again?

It’s been over a year since Gerard released the 6th and final book in her Bodyguard series. While Into the Dark ended one series, it also set the foundation for the Black Ops series. We first met Gabriel Jones and Jenna McMillan in Into the Dark. As a journalist, Jenna was in Argentina following a story. Gabe’s motives were a little less clear. Still, they were memorable characters who clearly needed to have their story told. The only thing that was a tad bit confusing was the timeline.

Returning to the United States from Argentina, Jenna is far from the ballsy, aggressive reporter she was when she left. After being taken prisoner and then rescued by Gabe, Jenna confidence is badly shaken. Retreating to her family’s ranch in Wyoming, Jenna hopes to regain what she lost in Argentina; her faith in herself and her faith in her ability as a reporter. When her editor calls and tells her that there is a hot story waiting for her, Jenna takes it if only to prove to herself that she can be the reporter that she used to be. She soon finds herself going back to Argentina, unwittingly heading right back toward the man she has not stopped thinking about since he pulled her out of an Argentinean prison.

Gabe Jones is far from the idealist he was when he joined the US Military years before. Having long since left the Army, Gabe is an operative for Black Ops, Inc., an organization that is contracted to do things the military and the CIA won’t touch. When the security detail BOI was hired to do cross paths with Jenna McMillan, Gabe’s instincts tell him that it’s not a coincidence. Resolutely deciding to put her on a place to the States as soon as possible, Gabe underestimates Jenna’s determination to get the story and prove to herself that she still has what it takes.

Now Gabe and Jenna are confronted with the ugly fact that Jenna was lured to Argentina for a reason. All the evidence points to MC6, the Neo-Nazi group that both Gabe and Jenna had a hand in taking down. While they knew they didn’t wipe out the entire organization, they thought everyone associated with the Argentina arm of MC6 was dead. That mistaken belief could possibly cost both of them their lives.

I was hooked while reading this book. While I didn’t remember specific details of Gabe and Jenna in Into the Dark, I did remember that Gabe was an extremely tortured hero. He was beyond tortured. He was tormented by past deeds, tormented in a way that wouldn’t allow him to find happiness. Though Jenna is the first woman to bring his dormant feelings back to life, Gabe refuses believe they have a future. Jenna was the perfect woman for Gabe because she wouldn’t let his stubborn nature destroy what they could possibly have together.

Cindy Gerard certainly has a talent for writing emotional scenes. There was a scene at the end of the book that was so powerful that I could almost feel what Gabe was feeling. His reluctance to have any sort of relationship with Jenna wasn’t because he didn’t love her. It was more because he wanted to protect both her and himself from any potential pain. His inner struggle was heartbreaking to read about. That is what makes the ending of this book so perfect.

I can’t wait to read Gerard’s next book.

4.5 out of 5.

  1. I have never read anything of hers. Do they have to be read in order?

I love emotional scenes and you’ve piqued my interest with this one. Could I read it without missing anything from not reading the previous ones?

  2. Just got my copy yesterday! I really enjoyed her Bodyguard series. To The Brink was my favorite. The sex was smokin’ wasn’t it? 🙂

Excellent review. Can’t wait to read it!
