Little, Brown and Co delays eBook release of Breaking Dawn

Aka Holly Almost Had A Freakout AKA Wal-Mart Saved the Day AKA Holly Isn’t Winning Mother of the Year..again

I went last night at midnight to get Breaking Dawn. As I’m sure you remember (how can you not, when I mentioned it every other post) I live out in the middle of nowhere. The only place in town that sells new books (besides the grocery store) is Wal-Mart. The closest big name book store is about 60 miles away from me (hence the reason I adore eBooks and Amazon). I’d planned to download the eBook of Breaking Dawn at midnight last night, but Little, Brown and Company decided to delay the eBook release 24 hours, because they felt they wouldn’t be able to control the times people were able to download. For example, I live in California, but it’s possible I would have been able to download the book at 9 p.m., because it would have been available in eFormat at midnight EST, which means I would have had the book a full 3 hours before other Californians who were waiting at the midnight release parties for a print copy.

I was furious about this, of course, even if I do somewhat understand their reasoning, but not nearly as furious as I would have been if Wal-Mart hadn’t been participating in the midnight release thing. Because I’m sorry, one book is not worth a 60 mile drive, especially with gas prices the way they are. Well, this book isn’t, anyway.

Lucky for all parties involved (they so didn’t want to feel the wrath of Holly) Wal-Mart shelved it at midnight last night. So I trekked down to get it. This is the part where probably I’m not going to win Mother of the Year (for the 12th year in a row, dammit) and more than likely won’t even be nominated. Because, uh, I woke up my nine-year-old and dragged him with me. Hey, it was better than leaving him home alone, right? And he got a new hardcover Star Wars book out of the deal. See, I’m a good mama. What? Stop looking at me like that. You would have done the same thing. Sheesh.

Anyway, I read the last two chapters before going to bed last night. Not quite sure how I feel about what happened, but I’m not entirely surprised (even if I haven’t read the book yet). I did read the first couple chapters before bed, but haven’t picked it up since. I’ll probably read it today. Maybe. I guess we’ll see.
