Early Impressions: Breaking Dawn

Posted August 3, 2008 by Holly in Discussions, Reviews | 10 Comments

I’m a little more than halfway through Breaking Dawn now. I’ve been taking my time reading it, partly because it’s rather slow going in some parts, but also because I want to take my time with this one, instead of rushing to the end like I’ve done with previous novels. Mainly because I’m worried about how this one will unfold – Meyer has burned me in the past and I’m not anxious to repeat the experience.

This novel is broken into three parts. I’ve just begun the 3rd part (about 4 chapters in) and so far it’s better than I expected.

Note: Completely Spoiler Free

Part 1
This reminded me of Twilight. Bella is very much back to being the same girl she was in Twilight, and I was pleasantly surprised by the way things turned out. Towards the end of this part something happens that I wasn’t surprised to see. It changes things somewhat, but I ended up more curious than anything. I was concerned about how Meyer would handle one aspect of this, and I’m very disappointed that she did exactly as I thought she would.

Part 2
This was also much better than I expected. I enjoyed the writing style and there were times when I laughed out loud. I also got teary -and even cried – several times. It was very emotional and compelling. At the end of this part I was furious that Meyer had done what I thought she’d do after I finished Part 1. I’m still furious. I’m curious to see how other people feel. Personally, I think she took the easy way out.

Part 3
The beginning of this part is a bit slower going for me. As it’s early in this part of the story yet, I’ll reserve judgment.

I imagine I’ll finish it sometime today. Look for a full review possibly tomorrow. Or perhaps even more Live Blogging later.

If some has read this novel already and wants to discuss, please email me at cranberrytarts at gmail dot com (no spaces). I’m trying to keep this post spoiler free, but I’d love to share my thoughts and opinions with someone who’s already read it.

  1. Hi Holly–
I still can’t pry the book from my daughter’s hands yet, although she did bring it to me at midnight and said I could read it while she was asleep. lol She has maybe 200 pages left, I think, so I’ll probably start it tonight or tomorrow morning.

She has laughed here and there, and shed some tears as well, and even really cried at one part yesterday afternoon. In the first 1/3 she said she a little taken a back and wasn’t sure she was liking it. But last night she said she was liking it better again. I tried to assure her that whatever the outcome, it will end with her believing in the power of love, because that is important to Meyer. Let’s just hope it is a happily ever after love story that we can all believe in.

I’ll email you when I start reading! 🙂

  2. So I want to know how it ends but I am scared that it is going to disappoint me A LOT!!! Gawd I hope it doesn’t I really hope it doesn’t

Holly ~ I think I know what you’re hinting at, and if so, I’m not sure that I’m really surprise, but I am let down. And pissed. And I wish my niece would hurry up and read this already so I can get my hands on her copy.
