Review: The Flirt by Kathleen Tessaro.

Grade: 2.75 out of 5

Tantalizing words written on an ivory card. It is the first clue that will lead an intrigued and intriguing London lady on an odyssey of sensual experience designed to awaken her romantic nature.

Out-of-work actor Hughie Venables-Smythe has found a profitable new outlet for his talents. He is hired, often by distraught husbands, to flirt with wives who are feeling neglected in their relationships. His current seductive campaign is focused on Olivia, the spouse of a narcissistic billionaire, and the lady is responding quite nicely to the cream-colored missives he secretly leaves for her. So nicely, in fact, that Hughie decides to employ a similar technique—and shockingly similar messages—in his pursuit of his own heart’s desire: the aloof and charming lingerie designer, Leticia. But the canny, professional flirt’s brazen anonymous intrusions into the lives of two women are about to set in motion a series of remarkable events that no one could have anticipated—setting the stage for shocking revelations about love, friendship, and domestic bliss.

This book had a cute cover and a pretty good blurb so I was interested in reading it. After having read it though, I can’t honestly say if I liked it or not. It’s a good storyline, something that I thought I’d enjoy but I found that as I was reading this, I missed the romance of ONE couple. This story follows a bunch of people who’s lives intermingle with each other. They’re all connected into this big story and it wasn’t that bad of a story but because there was so many characters in this story, I found it hard to connect with all of them and instead only conntected with one of them.

The one character that I really connected with was Rose but we didn’t see as much as I wanted to see from her. I wanted more with her, I wanted to know more about her, I wanted to get to know her son Rory a lot more and I wanted just more of her storyline. I enjoyed her personality and I guess because I’m a single mother myself, I wanted to see how she lived and how she worked and loved and all of that. I wanted her with Hughie right from the very beginning and the long sluggish read toward the end just wasn’t enough for me. I wanted THEIR story. But I never got it and I guess that’s why romance will always be my number one genre to read because I love me a good happy ending and though in this case, I kinda sorta got it…I want more than a kinda sorta, put it together yourself kind of happy ending.

I want to see why these two are perfect for each other even though I knew it. I knew they were perfect because the way they met was too cute. The crush we see Rose having on Hughie was what good romance is about.

Seeing them get their happily ever after. In this story, lots and lots of things happen and Rose’s storyline kind of gets lost in the shuffle. That bummed me out because I didn’t like Leticia. She was too cold, too hard for me to relate to and I just didn’t care for her character. I felt bad for her when we find out why she is the way she is but by that time, I was already set against her. Not any fault of the author, really, it’s just I found it too hard to like her. I liked Sam and thought that he was better suited for Leticia then Hughie was but I didn’t care too much for Sam anyway since I was more engrossed in Hughie.

And then there was Hughie, the main guy of the whole book. He was great, if you like the hottie who’s too broke to buy his own meals and STILL eats out every week. No money for food? EAT AT HOME but that’s not the way Hughie rolls. His good looks pretty much get him everything and everywhere. I enjoyed his character but was frustrated to hell and back because he was going after the wrong girl, spent all this energy going for a girl that was just so wrong for him.

The whole his Dad thing and his Mom thing was totally weird because it wasn’t natural, it didn’t really ring true for me. You spent all this time with this guy and then think, oh wow…it would be cool if they were related and then BAM! They are! It made me roll my eyes more than it made me smile.

All in all, this book was just an okay read for me. I’m having a hard time recommending it to you guys but since most of you guys hardly read chick lit then I guess it’s not a big deal anyway. But still, I read this book and after the slow pick up, the story just wasn’t that entertaining to me. I read on because I wanted to know what happened between Rose and Hughie and was sorely disappointed, mostly because it was more breezed over then anything else. I’m thinking that this isn’t the author’s fault but my own fault because I was reading this book, wishing that it was a romance and it wasn’t.

So, *sigh* I don’t think this book is going to get a second read anytime soon but I’ve certainly read worse books than this.

Review: The Broken H by J. L. Langley

Posted June 27, 2008 by Tracy in Reviews | 7 Comments

TITLE: The Broken H
AUTHOR: J.L. Langley
SERIES: Yes, this is book 2 in the Ranch series
Book 1: The Tin Star

REASON FOR READING: I had just finished My Fair Captain (OMG!) and didn’t have another book with me…but I had my ereader that had this book on it so I dove in.

SUMMARY: (From J. L. Langley’s site)
Sheriff Grayson Hunter hasn’t felt like he belonged for a long time. Once he loved The Broken H, his ancestral home and Shane Cortez with all that he was. Now he tries to stay as far away from the ranch and the man as possible until an accident brings them together.

Shane Cortez has been the Broken H’s foreman for going on twenty years, he’s lived on the ranch for even longer. Because of a rocky past that sent him fleeing his home and seeking refuge on The Broken H, he’s kept himself from the one thing that has always been dear to him…Grayson.

Now Shane has let go of the demons that haunted him for so long. And he wants Gray. They’ll have to mend what’s broken to make a life together.

THOUGHTS/OPINION:
The men…

I really liked Grayson. Gray was confident of who he was. He had left home and become a bull rider and made a name for himself. He had taken the money from his winnings and put himself through college even though his parents would have paid for it. He became a SWAT team member but eventually went back to his small town and was elected Sheriff. He was gay, but once he got together with Shane totally didn’t care who knew. His parents were very understanding people and had raised him to be a great man. I liked that his love for Shane hadn’t lessened over the years even though he believed that Shane wasn’t gay, and I liked that he didn’t care about the 13 year age difference between them

Shane was the Foreman of the Broken H. He had always loved Grayson, whose parents owned the Broken H, but more in a brotherly way until Gray started getting older. He had feelings for Gray when Gray was 17 but was afraid that he was influencing Gray’s sexual preferences with his own. Shane had a few confidence issues that were completely understandable based on his past. We eventually find out what his past entailed some emotional stress that he felt would influence Gray’s feelings for him. But Gray loved him despite his past. Oh, and Shane had great hair! Think Apache with hair down to his butt….mmmm!

Though I like the characters in the book I was a little eh about the story. There just wasn’t enough of it. The story line was good I just felt that there wasn’t enough of it put in. There was a ton of sex…which not always a bad thing, but I think the story suffered for it. Now, I was quite possilby influenced by the fact that I had just finished My Fair Captain which was so awesome and was expecting The Broken H to be just as good. It just wasn’t as good.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again?
As I’ve said, right before The Broken H I had read My Fair Captain which was incredibly wonderful so yes, I will definitely be reading more of Langley’s work. I can hardly wait for November and the The Englor Affair.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?
I’ll keep it.

Did you enjoy the book? Yes

Would you recommend this book to others? I don’t know. I’m torn on that one.

SCORE: 2.75 out of 5

Anything else? Nope

A Vampire Will Not Rest Until He Satisfi es His Hunger . . .
And what I, Reign, hungered for most of all was Olivia Gavin. I have never met a woman more beautiful, more tantalizing, and so I made her my bride. She promised me her heart and soul . . . in return, I plundered her flesh, and bound her to me for all eternity. Then, terrified of what I'd made her, she fled.
Now she has returned, desperate for my help in saving her beloved nephew. But my assistance comes at a price: She must share my bed once more, for the feel of her soft skin, the heat of her kiss, excite me still. And I know she desires me, even as she resists her own heart.
Yet, as we rediscover the passion that brought us together, an enemy waits to destroy us both . . .

Let the Night Begin is book four in Kathryn Smith‘s The Brotherhood of the Blood series. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this before I read it. I actually thought it was the second book. I’m rather annoyed that I’m three books behind, instead of one.

I know I’ve mentioned before that if done well, the “married couples reunite” story line really works for me, so I was really excited to start this one. Although that aspect of the story was strong, and the suspense plot was good, my enjoyment was overshadowed by the heroine.

30 years ago Reign lost his control and turned his wife into a vamp on their wedding night without asking her permission. It freaked her the hell out, so she disappeared. Then her nephew got kidnapped and they demanded she turn her husband over in exchange for her nephew. She goes to her husband Reign and tells him she needs his help, but doesn’t tell him she plans on betraying him.

Reign knows she’s up to something, but isn’t sure what. Regardless, he feels awful for ruining her life 30 years ago, and knows he needs to make it up to her, so he agrees to help her. In exchange for her returning to his bed. But the more time they spend together the less satisfied with a physical relationship alone Reign is. Before long he’s caught up in the intrigue and determined to win her forgiveness.

I love Reign. I love that he admits from the very beginning that he loves Olivia. I love that he admitted he was wrong and did his best to make it right. He apologized, he supported her, he offered her comfort and strength. He told her more than once that he cared for her and he would do anything to help her. He was basically everything us women want a man to be. It was a refreshing change from the norm, where he’s tortured and refuses to believe he needs a woman in his life. Reign fully admits Olivia is it for him.

The problem with this novel is the heroine. Period. End Stop.

She blames Reign for ruining her life 30 years ago, and at first I understood that. He frightened the hell out of her and took her choice away by turning her without her permission. But..she fully admits she wanted to be turned (or would have gladly accepted it had he asked). And she admits she would have forgiven him in short order had she stayed with him. She also admits to loving him in the beginning, and wanting eternity with him. She pines for him those long 30 years away from him (even while she curses him) and she immediately agrees to his demands that she return to his bed because she wants him so badly.

So I don’t understand why she then spends the next 200+ pages whining and crying about how he’s awful and horrible and RUINED HER WHOLE EFFING LIFE by turning her into a vamp, then feeling guilty because she’s going to betray him. It’s effing ridiculous how she forever blames him while she’s planning to turn him over to be slaughtered! She treats him like shit, constantly screaming at him, saying ridiculously cutting things to him and taking advantage of everything he offers her. Then she blames him for her attitude. Again and again she refuses to accept any responsibility for anything that’s happened in her life, putting all of it on Reign.

At one point, he gets down on his KNEES and begs her forgiveness (literally on his knees) for changing her without her permission, and two pages later she thinks to herself that she might have forgiven him, if he’d just shown some remorse. Shown some remorse? What does getting down on his knees and BEGGING FORGIVENESS show, if not remorse?

I think I would have been able to move past that, however, if she’d – at some point – fallen to her knees to beg HIS forgiveness. Unfortunately that never happened. And don’t get me started on her blindness in regards to her nephew’s true character. I have to tell you, it didn’t surprise me one bit that she raised him and he was nothing more than a spoiled brat (just so you know..he was an adult in the story) who would betray his family to get what he wanted. That she would continue to defend him and see only what she wanted to see, even when faced with proof of his true character was just the icing on the cake.

What started out as a strong, character driven story soon turned into one of my worst nightmares. While I think the hero was a wonderful character, the plot tight and the dialogue well done, they weren’t enough to overcome all the shortcomings of the heroine.

2.5 out of 5

I read something else by Smith ages ago and enjoyed it, so I’m going to assume this is a fluke and pick up the rest of this series. I’m a masochist, I know.

Lightning Reviews: Shiloh Walker (Part II)

Posted June 27, 2008 by Casee in Reviews | 0 Comments

Jamie McAdams expected it to be an open and shut case of embezzlement. The finger seemed to be pointed right at Andi Morrow, the quiet young lady who ran the daycare center at his godfather’s plant. Of course, she didn’t exactly have access to the cash, but she did live seriously outside her means.

Andi smelled like vanilla, tasted like sex, and moved like sin. It only took a few days for Jamie to realize he was hooked, and she was being framed. But maybe he should have told her that, before they used her as bait to catch the real embezzler.
Jamie always gets his man, even if it means coming in last with the woman he’s fallen in love with.

Of all the ebooks I read on our mini-vacation last weekend, this one was my favorite. Jamie was such an alpha and seeing how he fell for Andi was just so sweet to read. It was something that basically hit him over the head and happened before he realized. Through it all, he was deceiving her in a way that he knew would hurt her.

As usual, there is some smokin’ hot sex. The chemistry before the sex, though, that was some heady stuff.

“I want your wife.”

In the past twenty years, Joel Lockhart had crossed a lot of lines on his quest for vengeance. But this was a new one. He was demanding exclusive sexual access to another man’s wife.

One look at Tracy Grainger though, and he couldn’t stop himself. She was battered, beaten, but not quite broken—not yet. He made the demand of the crime lord with every intention of seeing it through. Anything to get her away from her vicious husband.

He never expected to fall in love. When he looked into Tracy’s eyes, he felt something stir in the emptiness of his heart. An emotion that was unknown to him. It didn’t take long for Joel to realize that he is willing to give up everything to have her, to hold her, to keep her safe.

But the price to stay with her will be high. Staying with her might require letting go of his quest for vengeance. Giving up his need to put his sister’s killers in the ground. Joel has to decide what is stronger—his need for vengeance or his need to have Tracy with him always.

If Coming in Last was my favorite of the weekend, this one was my least favorite.

I was immediately hooked by the opening. After that, I was just in disbelief. I just didn’t really feel Joel and Tracy. Again, lots of hot sex, but I just felt removed from the two of them. I don’t know if it’s b/c I read it right after Coming in Last.

As a battered wife, I really admired Tracy and how she escaped. She left on her own, with very little help. Even though she had fallen in love w/ Joel by that point, she didn’t wait for him to help her. There is a small paranormal aspect that worked well for me until the end.
