Review: Once and Always by Judith McNaught

Once and Always

Across the vast ocean sailed Victoria Seaton, a free-spirited American beauty left suddenly orphaned and alone. Eager to claim her long-lost heritage, she was amazed at the formal elegance of Wakefield, the sumptuous English estate of her distant cousin…the notorious Lord Jason Fielding. Sought after at plays, operas, and balls by London’s most fashionable ladies, Jason remained a mystery to Victoria. Bewildered by his arrogant demeanor, yet drawn to his panther-like grace, she came to sense the searingly painful memories that smoldered in the depths of his jade-green eyes.

Unable to resist her spitfire charm, Jason gathered her at last into his powerful arms, ravishing her lips with his kisses, arousing in her a sweet, insistent hunger. Wed in desire, they were enfolded in a fierce, consuming joy, free at last from the past’s cruel grasp. Then, in a moment of blinding anguish, Victoria discovered the shocking treachery that lay at the heart of their love…a love she had dreamed would triumph…Once And Always.

I love this book. Love it. It’s my favorite JM historical. Not something you hear often, I know. Yet every time I read this book, I love it a little more. Jason and Tory are two people that would never have ended up together, they are so opposite. Yet they are perfect for each other.

After her parents died, Victoria and her sister are sent to England to live with their mother’s relatives. Though they knew their mother was from the other side of the pond, they knew nothing else. Victoria agreed to go to England w/ her sister, but she knew she wouldn’t be there long. See, she was practically engaged and knew that her almost-fiance would be coming for her soon.

From the moment that Victoria and Jason meet, there are sparks. Victoria is rather naive, which is to be expected. When the weeks pass and she hears nothing from her fiance, Victoria doesn’t give up hope. Yet when she is faced with a decision to either wait for the man she loves or marry Jason, who can give her security, it’s an easier decision than she would have thought.

This book came close to having a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING, but JM didn’t take it that far. From the day of their wedding, there is one misunderstanding after another. Victoria wants to find peace in her new life as Jason’s wife, yet he makes that practically impossible. Eventually they come to an understanding and they both admit their feelings for the other.

Jason also has a past that will make almost every reader cry. He has gone through things that no man or woman should ever have to go through. The fact that he’s still able to love Victoria after everything he’s seen and been through is quite simply amazing. That’s what makes the love between these two characters so special. Jason, against the odds, found Victoria who makes him a better man and heals him in a way that no person has been able to do before.

Don’t miss this amazing book.

5 out of 5.

Danielle Steel: Yes or No?

Posted June 18, 2008 by Casee in Reviews | 14 Comments

So yesterday I was at home watching the Today show when Danielle Steel was interviewed. She was discussing her new book, Rogue. It got me to thinking…

Have you ever read a DS novel? Which one? Did you like it? Do you still read her?

One thing that stumped me in the interview is that she said it generally takes her 2-3 years to complete a book from start to finish. She has published a total of 106 books across all genres. Girl is looking good for being 212 years old, let me tell you.

Even though I no longer read her books, I have to admire the fact that a mother of NINE kids can crank out books like she can.

TBR Review Challenge: The Sun Witch

Posted June 18, 2008 by Tracy in Reviews | 14 Comments

TITLE: The Sun Witch
AUTHOR: Linda Winstead Jones

COPYRIGHT: 2004
SERIES: Yes this is the first in the Fyne Witch trilogy (aka Sisters of the Sun)
#2 The Moon Witch
#3 The Star Witch

Reason for reading:
The series was recommended to me over a year ago. I bought all three books right away but never got around to reading them.

Summary:
The three Fyne witches are sisters. For 365 years all Fyne witches have been cursed to never have a true and lasting love. Sophie is the youngest and the least powerful, or so she thinks, of the three sisters. She dreams for 3 nights of a man with green eyes. During her early morning swim she meets the man from her dreams and they share a sexual encounter. Sophie realizes how sad the man is and wishes him luck and well-being.

A year later the man, Kane, comes back to the pond where he first met Angel, which is how Sophie had had identified herself. Kane believes the woman from his dreams is not real. Kane ends up seeing Sophie at the pond, but she’s also with their daughter Ariana. After learning of the baby, Kane wants to marry Sophie but she refuses. She knows herself enough to know that if she spends time with Kane she might fall in love and the Fyne witches can’t fall in love because the men they love end up dying before they turn 30.

During the time Kane is town to try to talk Sophie into marrying him a scorned suitor kidnaps Ariana and takes her to the Imperial Palace with instructions that if Sophie wants her child back that she will need to go to the palace and marry him.

Once at the palace the Emperor plans to marry Sophie as revenge on her father. Kane and Sophie need to save Ariana, but then they need to save themselves as well.

Thoughts/Opinion:
This book had a lot of stuff going on with many different characters.

There was Sophie who was not planning on loving just one man. Since the Fyne woman were not to know love she would just give her body to men and have children that way. (Ok – not the best of plans – but it worked for her mom so why wouldn’t it work for her?) She was a virgin when she went to Kane and then could not stop thinking about him. Once Kane returns, her feelings grow despite her attempts to quell them. Once Ariana is kidnapped she just wants her baby back. While she is on the journey to the palace to retrieve her daughter her powers, as well as her feelings for Kane, grow and grow. By the time she is at the palace she is learning to control those powers. She discovers that not only is she not the least powerful witch in her family…she’s the most powerful. I truly loved Sophie. She was a quiet unassuming woman before she met Kane but love for her child and eventually for Kane makes her strong and capable. It sounds like a cheesy thing…but the strength she gains from her love works for the story.

There was Kane who was a rebel against the Imperial Army and his quest is to unseat the Emperor. The Imperial Army kills his family and he is left for dead. He only wants to die and is lying by a pond hoping he can drink himself into a grave when Sophie finds him. After their sexual encounter Sophie, unbeknownst to Kane, wishes him good luck and well being. When Kane awakes he is happy, healthy and has great luck for 1 year. Unfortunately he can’t remember anything of his life before the day with Sophie. After a year and finally finding Sophie her sister takes the spell off. He remembers that his family is gone and is extremely mad at Sophie. He eventually gets over this – learning that he can’t live without Sophie after she is taken by an Anwyn, Ryn…which I got the impression of being a werewolf of sorts…who thinks she’s his mate. (This was kind of an odd way to introduce this character into the story and it was a very short part. I haven’t read the backs of the other books but I’m guessing he plays a part in one of them). Kane saves Sophie and realizes he loves her. Kane is just nothing but hot. He not overtly sexual for most of the book but he just has this sensuality about him that just kind of oozes from him. He’s very protective of Sophie and Ariana as he should be and I loved that.

Then there’s the ongoing story about the Emperor and Liane. She is a concubine and assassin at the palace but also has the ear of the emperor. She hates him and wants nothing more than to be trusted, and not bodily searched each time she sees him, so that she can bring a knife to his bedroom and kill him. Later we discover that Liane is Kane’s sister who was stolen from their home when she was 15. After all is said and done she ends up loving the Emperor. (I can understand that Liane has learned to have feelings for this man, but she wanted her freedom sooooo badly it was hard for me to see that she was given it and didn’t take it.) The Emperor also decides after hearing of Sophie’s sisters that they need to be brought to the palace but we never learn for what use. Because of Sophie’s powers Liane ends up being pregnant at the end of the book but we’re left up in the air as to what will happen since she is a concubine and of course not married. The entire book the Emperor would only accept a legitimate heir.

The end of the book kind of left us hanging which I’m never a big fan of. Kane and Sophie and Ariana are all together and Sophie is pregnant again…but the curse isn’t broken. The end states the fact that they will be trying to discover a way to break the curse so they can have their HEA but I wanted happy, happy, joy, joy! Kane also planned on rejoining his rebel forces to unseat the Emperor and I’m wondering where this will leave Sophie and the babies since the chances of him getting killed are huge.

I love my HEA’s in my book. This book just didn’t provide that for me. I’m glad that Kane and Sophie are together and in love but it just wasn’t enough. Although I didn’t think the curse would be broken in this book, since it’s a trilogy, I was definitely disappointed that more steps weren’t taken toward that end. Overall though I thought it was a good read.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again?
I read one other of her books, Raintree: Haunted, that was pretty good. I will read the other 2 books in the series because I was left with too many unanswered questions from this one.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?
I haven’t actually decided. I guess it depends on the other 2 books and how I feel about the series as a whole.
Did you enjoy the book? Yes

Would you recommend this book to others?
Not at this time, but again, maybe after I finish the other 2 books. I can’t imagine you could read the other 2 without reading the first.
Score: 3.5 out of 5

Anything else? Um, no.

Lisa Marie Rice’s Midnight Series

Posted June 18, 2008 by Ames in News | 10 Comments

Midnight Man

Interior decorator Suzanne Barron’s new tenant is the most dangerously sexy man she’s ever met. Navy Commander John Huntington, a former SEAL (aka ‘Midnight Man’) works best under cover of darkness. Within hours of meeting him, Suzanne has wild, no-holds barred sex with John, then panics at the depth of her passionate response to such a powerful and dangerous warrior. Suzanne doesn’t do sex like that. John is definitely someone she needs to avoid for her own peace of mind. But when killers come for her, Suzanne known she can turn to only one man. John will guard and protect her body. But who will guard and protect her body against John?

This was my first taste of Lisa Marie Rice and I admit I enjoyed it. Although the characters hopped into bed (and love) quickly, it was still a good read. Suzanne is a cool cat, very collected and put-together. Into her office comes this extremely alpha, ex-military, testosterone ridden man that shakes her up in a way she has difficulty dealing with.

John’s protective instincts come roaring to life when he meets Suzanne. He wants to keep her safe and happy and he goes berserker when someone tries to kill her. He spirits her away to a remote cabin while the police find the who called out the hit on Suzanne. This makes for some interesting reading – John and Suzanne in a cabin…I’m surprised the cabin didn’t burn down. LOL Needless to say, these two are very combustible.

C+

Midnight Run

Claire Parks has been very sick, but she’s fine now-just fine-and ready to paint the town red. Well, pink. On her first excursion into the wild world of dating, she nets Bud, a tall, sexy, good-looking lumberjack. She won him fair and square, her prize for not dying. But after a weekend of wild sex, she discovers he’s not what she thinks he is. Undercover police officer Lieutenant Tyler “Bud” Morrison can’t believe his eyes. What’s a ‘princess’ doing in a dance club known for its rough trade? She needs rescuing, and rescuing women is what Bud does best. He saw Claire first-finders keepers. After a weekend of the hottest sex he’s ever had, he’s definitely keeping this one. When trouble comes her way, he pulls out all the stops to protect her. Except Claire doesn’t want Bud at her back. She wants him in her bed.

Ok, I was a bit confused when I started reading this one. I thought I was reading the books out of order – but these three are intricately woven together but still separated for each female character. Claire is Suzanne’s friend, and there’s a scene in Midnight Man that features Claire and Bud together…and yet Midnight Run starts with Bud seeing Claire in a bar. So that threw me for a second, but then I got it. Haha

So yeah, Claire was extremely sick as a child and had to fight to stay alive. Her father is some crazy rich guy who spared no expense on his little girl and he sheltered her from the world while she was trapped in the hell of her sick body. But Claire is healthy now and eager to get out from under Daddy’s thumb. So she decides to quit her job and get a new one, doing something she truly enjoys. One night she decides to go out with one of her new coworkers and meets Bud – who is undercover at the moment. When her coworker ditches her, Bud offers Claire a ride home – and Claire, instantly attracted to Bud, invites him into her home and bed so she can truly begin living (yeah, she was a virgin, but its understandable with how sick she was).

Claire hides her true identity from Bud because right now he’s treating like her a 100% healthy woman (which she is) but she knows as soon as he knows about her sick past, he’s going to treat her with kid gloves. And she’s right – he does. After discovering the truth about Claire’s past (and that he had actually rescued her from a kidnapper early in his career) Bud begins to temper his need for Claire, which frustrates the hell out of Claire. The conflict here is all internal – can Bud get over Claire’s past illness?

I think is my favorite out of the three. A B for Midnight Run.

Midnight Angel

Her nightmares don’t stop when she opens her eyes… In one night, talented musician Allegra Ennis lost her sight, her father and her career in a brutal attack she can’t remember. Now she’s alone in a world of darkness, her only company the nightmares in her head…and a killer is stalking her every move. Scarred and disfigured by war, tough former SEAL Douglas Kowalski never thought a beauty like Allegra could love someone like him. He doesn’t expect more than a one-night stand. But when Allegra’s life is threatened, Kowalski realizes he will do anything to keep her safe – and by his side.

I enjoyed Midnight Angel but one thing bothered me soooo much. What military man calls a villain a “bad guy”?? The bad guy this, the bad guy that. I don’t think so!

Aside from that, good book. I don’t think I ever read about a blind heroine before and LMR does a good job, imo, of placing the reader inside Allegra’s head. What her worries are, how her life has changed due to her blindness.

Allegra was heading to the top with her singing career when her ass-hat manager decided to take her in the wrong direction. When she decides to break contract, her manager attacks her and kills her father. Which is why Allegra is blind. And her manager is not in jail, but in a psychiatric facility, plotting his revenge.

Douglas Kowalski is an ugly man. Or so he believes. He has a scar on his face, a reminder from one of his missions. When he hears Allegra singing for the first time, he’s immediately in awe and wishes to meet her. He doesn’t realize she’s blind at first, so when she doesn’t look at him, he’s kind of put off. But when he speaks, Allegra falls for his sexy-ass voice and after rescuing her from some “bad guys,” Kowalski and Allegra light up the sheets. Hubba hubba.

LOL A B- for Midnight Angel.

I enjoyed LMR’s writing, although her heroes come off as a bit too alpha. Her love scenes are hot stuff though, and that’s always a good thing in my books. LMR is pure escapism.

Her next release is Dangerous Secrets, out July 1.
