Some Romance Related Reading Questions

Posted June 7, 2008 by Holly in Discussions, Reviews | 7 Comments

Below are some romance related reading questions for your amusement. This was something that floated around ages ago, and I decided to resurrect it. Surprisingly (or maybe not so much?) most of my answers were the same as before.

Contemporary, Historical, or Paranormal?

I prefer contemps, but I do enjoy Historicals and Paranormals from time to time. I am completely over vampires, however (With the exception of Colin, Meljean Brook’s Vampire from her Guardians Series. I lurrrve Colin), and have no desire to read about them. At all.

Hardback or Trade Paperback or Mass Market Paperback?

I prefer MMP, though I will pick up trades now and again. I don’t really do hardcover unless it’s a favorite author or I get it on sale.

Heyer or Austen?
Austen. I love Austen

Amazon or Brick and Mortar?
Amazon. I do almost all my online shopping there. It’s hard to resist the pull of free 2 day shipping. *sigh*

Barnes & Noble or Borders?

Borders. I had a kerfluff once with my local B&N, not to mention it’s smaller and they don’t stock as many books. Plus, I just like the atmosphere better at Borders.

Woodiwiss or Lindsay?

I’m not a huge fan of either. And I can’t really answer this fairly as I’ve only read one or two from each.

First romance novel you ever remember reading?

The Return of Eden McCall by Judith Duncan. I loved it, though it would be years before I realized romance was my one true love.

Alphabetize by author Alphabetize by title or random?

By author. Then by title, unless there are connecting books, then I put those in order.

Keep, Throw Away or Sell?
Always keep. I’ve thrown away 2 books in my life, and both had been eaten by the dog. I should sell the ones I don’t read anymore, but I just can’t bring myself to do it…

Read with dustjacket or remove it?
It gets on my nerves when the dust-jacket has been removed. I always leave it on.

Sookie Stackhouse or Anita Blake?

C. None of the above? I’ve never either and honestly have no desire to start now.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When the chapter breaks, unless I just can’t keep going anymore.

“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
Hmm, either or. I don’t care, if the story is good.

Crusie or SEP?

Tie. They’re equally good.

Buy or Borrow?

Buy. I have to own it once I’ve read it, good or bad.

Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
Recommendations or Reviews from people I trust. It’s hard for me to step outside of my comfort zone and try a new author if I’m not forcibly pushed there.

Tidy ending or Cliffhanger?

I’m all about the tidy endings. I want everything wrapped up in a nice, neat little bow. I’ll make an exception, however, for books I know belong in a series(i.e. JDR’s In Death’s)

Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?

Always. Morning, noon or night. I’d read 24/7 if I could. It does help me wake up to begin my day with a book. I wake up, make coffee, then sit down to read a chapter or two. Then I check my email and start getting ready to face the day. But I always begin with a book, and most of the time I end the day with a book, too.

Series or standalone?

I enjoy a good series as much as the next series slut, but I’d love it if publishers would go back to releasing standalones. There just aren’t enough on the market right now.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
Always by Jeane Renick. Fabulous book.

I’m not going to make this a formal meme by tagging a grip to do this. Casee and Rowena, I expect you to, but for the rest of you, I hope you’ll answer these either here in the comments or on your own blog, then tell us you did so. I’d love to read your answers. =)
