Shadow Magic
Book description:

When Hannah Wentworth temporarily flees her life in San Francisco to join her sister D’Anu witches in Otherworld, she vows to help them conquer the evil bent on destroying the human realm. But the only one who can help her happens to be the king of the Dark Elves. The father to her nemesis, Rhiannon of the D’Anu. And the one man Hannah can never, ever trust…especially because of her dangerous attraction to him.

Garran knows that the beautiful, headstrong Hannah is wary of him for having banished his people to a life underground. But now Garran can right that wrong by helping her and the other gray witches in their dangerous battle in San Francisco—even if doing so means sacrificing the passion he’s found only in Hannah’s arms…

This is the fourth book in McCray’s Magic series. I’ve been intrigued by King Garran of the Drow since book two. He got even more interesting in book three. So I was a happy reader when I found out who this book would be about.

After a very public battle with the demon-goddess Ceithlenn and the Formanii demons, the D’Anu witches are forced to flee San Francisco for Otherworld. It’s in Otherworld that they must make their plans to defeat Ceithlenn and stop San Francisco from being destroyed. To do that, the D’Anu must ask for aid from the Dark Elves, more specifically, King Garran. Though he is father to one of the D’Anu witches, his duty to his people comes before all else.

After visiting the Great Guardian, Garran agrees to assist the D’Anu and D’Danaan in their war against Ceithlenn. It doesn’t come without a high price for Garran, however. Given the special ability to transport the Formanii back to the Underworld, Garran will only have two chances. If he attempts to do it a third time, he will quite possibly lose his life, leaving his people without a King. Garran still feels certain that he is doing the right thing.

Hannah Wentworth has agreed to be the liaison between the D’Anu and the Drow. Feeling an attraction to Garran that she can’t explain, Hannah is helpless against the feelings that Garran invokes. Not even the fact that his daughter is Hannah’s adversary can dampen the feelings she has for Garran. Suddenly Hannah is fighting for more than the city she loves and the company she built from nothing, she’s fighting for a life with a man who brought love into her life so unexpectedly.

Garran was a true hero. Even though he didn’t want to hesitate to help his daughter and her friends, he didn’t forget that he was King first. That didn’t mean that he didn’t love his daughter, he just wouldn’t forsake his duty to his people. He couldn’t put his feelings before the well being of the Drow. He didn’t apologize for that. He was what he was. After loving Rhiannon’s mother so fiercely, Garran didn’t ever expect to have feelings like he has for Hannah. The relationship between Garran and Hannah was about compromise. Both were willing to compromise and that is one thing that made their relationship so special. I think these two are possibly my favorite couple of this series thus far.

McCray also did a good job of continuing the conflict. For those who have read the series, you know that if she kept going with the same ‘ol conflict, it would have gotten booooring. She threw a nice little twist in that should set the next few books up quite nicely. I’m very interested to see where she takes it. The fifth book (Nov. ’08), will be Jack’s book. As a human, he has definite limitations, yet I have faith that the author will make sure he’s just a strong a hero and the D’Danaan and the Drow.

4.25 out of 5.
