Seduction is something Fionna Hawkes knows nothing about. So when she encounters a sexy stranger on a moonlit street, her first instinct is to defend herself against her darkly handsome suitor. But letting go of suspicion and allowing herself to fall for Lord Aidan McBride brings even greater danger. In his eyes, she glimpses a powerful passion she longs to fulfill. In his arms, she aches with the secret she longs to unburden. A secret that could cost her her livelihood—and her life.

Aidan could never resist a mystery, especially one as mesmerizing as the lovely Miss Hawkes! Drawing her into the shelter of his embrace, he won't rest until he convinces her to reveal everything. Braving the danger that stalks Fionna at every turn, Aidan is determined to defend her—and just as determined to claim her as his own.

I have never read a Samantha James novel so I didn’t know what to expect when I opened this book. I don’t even think I heard anything bad or good for that matter about Samantha James so I really had a clean slate with this new to me author. I can’t say that I was exactly disappointed but I don’t think I was completely wowed either.

We’ve got the undercover author thing going on in this book and I can’t say that it was the most horrible thing because I enjoyed bits and pieces of it but it’s nowhere near my favorite or even a OMGOSH YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK kind of book.

It was just good.

I enjoyed Aidan and I enjoyed Fionna but I didn’t really connect with either of them. I can’t say for sure if Aidan was an Alpha hero or if he was Beta hero, he was kind of in between even though he’s a military man. He had these blue eyes that wouldn’t quit it and I loved his protectiveness over Fionna and how honest he was about what he felt for Fionna, even when, in my opinion she didn’t deserve it.

Fionna on the other hand, she’s used to being alone so when Aidan comes into her life and disrupts it, she balks at the idea of him trying to bulldoze his way into her everyday life. Deep down, she loves it but she also clings to her solitude because she’s the undercover author and if anyone finds out about that, her career as author to all of those dark and demonish stories is dunzo.

And plus, she’s got this other secret that she holds on tightly to. I guess I can’t blame her for wanting to keep that a secret and I can’t really blame her for not wanting any changes in her life but hot damn, when she kept going back and forth with the whole Aidan thing, leading that fool on and then pushing him away…it got really old and I wanted to smack her already.

But aside from those two things, this book was good. Not the best thing since sliced bread, not the worst thing either but it was an enjoyable read.

You should try it out because you never know, you might like it more than I did.

  1. I did enjoy this book since the hero and heroine are normal people, such as Fionna with her writing and bookstore. She owns a bookstore. Love it!
Even though the ending was a bit too pat for me and seemed a bit rushed. But overall I enjoyed this and Samantha James can sure write nice historical romances. 🙂

I did enjoy that aspect of it, that they were normal people and not super rich and super snobby and what not but it was just good for me, not spectacularly good or anything, just…good. =)
