Help A Sister Out Will Ya?

Posted March 12, 2008 by Rowena in Discussions, Reviews | 9 Comments

Okay dear readers of Book Binge, in the comments of my post on our taste in romance over the years, our reader friend, Carolyn Jean mentioned that she was a new to historical romance reader and asked us quite nicely if we could hook her up with some historical pimps.

Let’s be dear readers and fellow romance pimps and help a sister out with some historical titles that she should definitely try out in her quest to read more historicals.

There’s so much to choose from and I’m sure you guys won’t disappoint in this call for help since I’ve read lots and lots of reviews by you guys on fantastic historicals that you guys loved. Stop by and drop some titles in the comments section of this post so that we can all see some new to us titles that we haven’t tried and hopefully spread the good cheer around.

A list of your top 5 historicals would suffice, I think.

Here’s mine:

1. Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.
2. The Wallflower Series by Lisa Kleypas. (Secrets of a Summer’s Night, It Happened One Autumn, Devil in Winter, Scandal in Spring and Mine til Midnight)
3. The Mallory Series by Johanna Lindsey. (Love Only Once, Tender Rebel, Gentle Rogue, The Magic of You, Say You Love Me, The Present, A Loving Scoundrel, Captive of My Desires)
4. Something Wonderful and Almost Heaven by Judith McNaught.
5. The Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn. (The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer from a Gentleman, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip, with Love, When He Was Wicked, It’s In His Kiss, On the Way to the Wedding)

Alright, there’s my list and even though I detested On the Way to the Wedding, I quite enjoyed the rest of the series and couldn’t very well leave out the last book but be warned that book was lamer than lame so you might not like that book so I’m warning you, the only reason I’m even telling you about that book is because it’s part of the series. The other books were really good and I’m sure you’ll enjoy them.

Now your turn readers, what are YOU going to recommend for Carolyn Jean to read?

  1. For some newer books I would recommend the Elizabeth Hoyt books, and The Spymaster’s Lady has been getting a lot of buzz lately (although I haven’t read it myself yet!

  2. I”m not a big fan of historicals
but these are the ones I did enjoy:

Dreaming of You (Cravenators UNITE!) Lisa Kleypas

Rid the Fire by Pamela Clare

    The Touch of Fire
    A Lady of the West
    Angel Creek
    All by Linda Howard

And the entire Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon.

    Weena,

Thanks for stopping by! Been missing you! Muah!

  3. Carolyn Jean, I know this will be a shocker, but I have to recommend JO GOODMAN. I have loved all the Goodman books I’ve read, but My Steadfast Heart is the one I’d recommend to start with. That one will get you hooked. 😉

    A few other favs:

Lady of the West by Linda Howard
Once and Always by Judith McNaught
    The Wedding by Julie Garwood
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas

I recently read The Spymaster’s Lady by Joanna Bourne and really enjoyed it.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to try!

Ooh, Rowena and Casee, you guys listed the really good McNaught historicals!

Of course, LoS. Also, Lord Perfect from Loretta Chase was fabulous as well.

Worth Any Price by Lisa Kleypas (had to get my Nick dig in for all you Cravenators!)

I also adore England’s Perfect Hero by Suzanne Enoch (but if you have to read a series in order, then read The Rake and London’s Perfect Scoundrel first).

If you want to try Scottish Lairds, I love the Highland Lord series by Karen Ranney.

  6. Rowena

Thanks everyone for your recs, I really appreciate it!

Now when Carolyn Jean sees this we’ll be in business! =)

  7. Definitely read The Duke by Gaelen Foley. My Lady Notorious by Jo Beverly is another favorite of mine. The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss is a great Medieval if you like that time period. I could go on and on, but I will stop there.
