It’s that time again, Dear Readers. Back to school shopping and schedules. Homework and lunch money. Required reading and Algebra. Piece and quiet at home in the morning and crazy afternoons and after school sports and…

Another Book Binge Contest.

Yes, that’s right, we here at Book Binge want to celebrate Back To School with another giveaway. But you have to work for it…and it comes with homework.

The Assignment:

Tell us what your favorite read in school was. What book was required reading that you just loved? Something you completely devoured. Or, if you can’t think of one, what was the WORST read you had in school?

The Prize:

Leave your answer in the comments or on your own blog with a link and in honor of this being a Back To School contest, we’re giving one lucky winner:

The entire Susan Elizabeth Phillips Stars/Bonner Brothers Football Series (Who didn’t love a jock in HS? Even if he was an ass, he was still good to look at, right?)

or

Perfect and Paradise by Judith McNaught (A teacher, in keeping with our theme, and an old High School Flame)

Or

if you’re not interested in any of those…2 books of your choice.

The Homework:

We’re asking that you do a guest review for Book Binge for at least one of the books (or all of them, if you prefer).

Deadline:

The contest ends Friday, August 31st and the winner will be announced Saturday, September 1st.

Due Date:

Homework review is due no later than two weeks after you receive your package of books (We’ll be flexible about this, however, because we know real life intrudes on reading time now and again).

Kick the school year off right. Enter today!

  1. Hmmm, favorite book read while in school… that’s a tough one… I’ll have to think about it LOL 😛 but great contest again!

  2. Ohh, my fav read in school was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It’s about a boy who gets into a plane crash on his way to visit his dad afte the pilot has a heart attack.
He is forced to survive in the woods all by himself. The only thing he has with him is a small hatchet that was a gift from his dad.
I bought this book for my oldest son several years ago. I totally need to re read it. It’s very very good.

I think I was in grade 6 the first time I had to read it. We even got to watch the movie in class afterwards.

  3. Not joining the contest but …

I can’t remember reading assignments for some reason??? Writing assignments, yes, but not reading. (I know I read alot of Shakespeare because I took a Shakespeare English class, but I liked those.)

  4. Woohoo! Wandered onto your new link via Insomnomania. Added you to my site… and desperately hoping to get some Bonner boys into my library (I’m going to do a review of The. Best. Book. Ever. on my website. Just gotta survive to the weekend!)

  5. Ah, Lori… I’m opening my year with Macbeth (theory: start with a bang, and Heart of Darkness will be a total cakewalk!)

Holly et al: this is a totally unrelated question, but I’ve got to ask. Is this site replacing Sanctuary’s Finest, or are you running the two sites in tandem?

  6. Kate,
This one has pretty much replaced SF, although I do (or someone does) on occasion update there, just to keep things interesting.

For all new, daily things and contests, however, this is the place to be.

  7. I enjoyed reading Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, partly because we also got to see the movie version with Nastassja Kinski in class.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding was also a very memorable school read and I recall getting to see a film for this on too. I wonder what kind of book it would have turned into if it had been a bunch of school girls and not boys stranded on an island.

  8. Lori

Without a doubt, the book I hated the most was The Good Earth by Pearl Buck.

I think I dug MacBeth. I had a great AP English teacher, and we really dissected the play. Those were some twisted dudes! Loved it.

  9. My fav from high school? Several come to mine Catcher in the Rye, All But My Life, East of Eden but my absolute favorite was….BEOWULF!

I remember LOVING it when everyone else was just trying to figure out the Old English lingo. This book stuck with me. In college I was studying to be an English teacher when I decided to pursue Library Science instead I realized that I got to chose a Focus Area (if you were studying Education you didn’t HAVE to have a focus area) so I chose my focus to be in Medieval literature. Thanks to my HS love fest with Beowulf!!!! They’re coming out with a Beowulf movie sometime soon I’m anxious to see if they get the story right or if they F’it up!

  10. Favorite read: probably Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1. I never really got Shakespeare until I read this one. Loved the contrast between Prince Hal and Hotspur. And of course, Falstaff is one of the greatest characters ever invented.

Worst read: Great Expectations by Dickens. Or maybe Bleak House. Anyway, I hate Dickens. If Miss Haversham was the main character of GE instead of that wimp Pip, it would have been a hella better book IMO.

  11. Chantal,
That plot sounds VERY familiar. I’m going to have to look it up and see if it’s the same one I read. IIRC, I really enjoyed it.

    Zeek,
I liked Shakespeare, too, but only after my junior English/Lit where we dissected them. Prior to that I was lost every time I read one. lol

    Lori,
    Hamlet is a personal favorite.

I don’t think I’ve ever read The Good Earth. I’m going to check it out. 🙂

    Sue A,
Lord of the Flies has been and probably always will be one of my all time favorites.

    Mollie,
You just reminded me…I need to do a re-read of Beowulf.

But wait, I thought they’d already made it into a movie, no?

    Seton,
I’m almost embarrassed to admit this but…I don’t think I ever read Henry IV. I need to rectify that!

I’m so glad all of you have entered.

    😉

  12. I didn’t like The Good Earth either. Meh. The one book I hated was Madame Bovary.

Chantal, The Hatchet sounds familier to me too.

My senior year we had the choice of reading either Macbeth or Hamlet. I wanted to read Macbeth but the majority of the class wanted to read Hamlet. Meh. Then we read King Lear and The Taming of the Shrew. Love Taming of the Shrew!

  13. I got stuck with Hamlet in AP English, too. The other class got to do McBeth. They had more fun. I still don’t get Hamlet…

    My answer is up here.

  14. Hmmm…I liked Catcher in the Rye a lot, The Tempest, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Heart of Darkness, A Separate Peace.

I wasn’t a big fan of Farenheit 452 (was that the temperature), Ethan Frome, Animal Farm. I’m sure there were many others. I remember a lot of it being boring. I wonder if I’d like them better today.

  15. Nerd alert! We HAD to read Great Expectations and I loved it! LOL I hated having to read Les Miserables-in French mind you. 😛

  16. My favorite read in high school was the Scarlet Pimpernel. I absolutely love that book. I have re-read it many times since then.

The books I hated were The Scarlet Letter, and Death of a Salesman. I struggled with both of these, just not my thing I guess.

I came across this site and just had to respond to this contest-I absolutely hated to read in school. But to annoy my older sisters I can remember checking out the same book she did which became my favorite book in school I think it was around 5th grade was Are you there God? Its me Margaret. by Judy Bloom. That book had it all about growing up and needing someone to help.I can remember wanting to read it but I didnt want anyone to actually see me reading it b/c then they would say I thought you didnt like to read.So when the teacher would make us turn in our book reports and I actually read the book instead of just the back cover she was so impressed I had to stand up in class and read my report to everyone and I had written the word sex in the report and she looked horrified.Lesson learned from myself and her maybe she should have read what I wrote and maybe I should have understood what I was reading?? Looking back it was hilarious thanks deann zzaw3@yahoo.com
