You Know You’ve Read Too Many Historical Romance Novels When…

*this post was inspired by my favorite Evil Cousin

  1. Whilst talking to your favorite cousin (ehem, that would be me, just in case you were wondering) and her lack of nookie for several years you say, “Yeah, you went so long without your maidenhead grew back”
  2. When asking a friend if she’d like to share a taxi with you, you ask if she’d like to rent a “hack” instead.
  3. Your kid was named after Lady Brenna from JG’s The Wedding.
  4. You name your other 3 friends, Lillian, Annabelle, Evie and swear up and down that you’re Daisy, no matter who’s the youngest in your circle of friends.
  5. When you already know that the hero and heroine will get caught in a comprising position and have to marry.
  6. The idea of a man in “breeches” gets you a little hot under the collar.
  7. You wonder if you would have success in snaring a husband in your first season out or if you would be a spinster.
  8. When you were lonely and single, you thought arranged marriages should make a comeback.
  9. You say things like “hoyden” “chit” “bloody hell” “wench” and “daft” in every day conversation.
  10. After a hot night of sex you think, “Oh I was just completely wanton!”
  11. While frantically searching for your reading glasses you ask your sister, “have you seen my spectacles?”
  12. You imagine your loved ones dressed up in period clothing. Especially kilts. You even ask your hubby to wear a kilt.
  13. When you want your own ladies maid.
  14. A whalebone corset sounds intriguing and slimming rather than painful.

What about you? Ever feel like you’ve read one too many historical romance novels or you’re living in the wrong time period? Want to add your reason to the list?

  1. I don’t feel like I read to many historicals at the moment. I read a ton in my late teens, and early twenties. I always got a kick out of how body parts were described. It was his manhood, her center.

  2. I…um…yea I don’t really like historicals. (Don’t hate me!) I know it was a different time and all but I can’t get over the virgin heroine who is so embarassingly innocent. I don’t know maybe ya’ll could recommend a few that aren’t going to annoy the piss out of me. But I won’t hold my breath. I am open to suggestions though….

  3. My, ummmm…. would have to be using vocabulary from a historical period just because I like the word and people around me either say, “What’s that mean?” Or, they are like my sweet brother who says, “I hate it when you use those words.

  4. You use words in Scrabble that have everyone around you looking at you funny. Then you wonder what rock they have been living under to have never heard the word. Wish I could think of one right now but I think it’s always funny when I get the weird looks. Finally I told my family they should really read more!

  5. ROTFLOL!
I read almost every sub-genre of romance and sady, I identify with just about everything on the list – especially the vocab usage. I use a TON of terms that come from historical novels due to the fact that I began reading historical romance at age 11 or 12. It became ‘ingrained’ I guess.

I have to say though, “Chit” is one word I don’t recommend using… people get REALLY offended by it because they usually mistake it for something else. LOL!

  6. #1 and a helluva lot more of the same statements!

    #5, most definitely.

#9, and doing it naturally, too.

    Bloody good list!!! LOL! :o)
